  • The best new releases of 2008 (so far) in easy-to-digest lists

    July 2, 2008 @ 8:00 am | by Jim Carroll

We’ve reached the half-way point in the year so here are some Best Of lists drawn from the last six months of new releases. Doing this now also means (a) I’ll save myself some work at the end of the year and (b) I can point those folks who were asking me to recommend some music for them towards this post. All the following lists are in no particular order and links given after each album are to interviews and reviews which I have done for The Ticket. In the case of the reviews, you may have to scroll down the page to get to the review.

10 albums which are still making me smile and/or jump around

    No Age “Nouns” (Sub Pop)

Vampire Weekend “Vampire Weekend” (XL) [Review]

Fleet Foxes “Fleet Foxes” (Sub Pop/Bella Union) [Review]

Lykke Li “Youth Novels” (LL) [Interview / review]

White Denim “Workout Holiday” (Full Time Hobby) [Interview / album review]

Bon Iver “For Emma, Forever Ago” (Jagjaguwar/4AD) [Review]

    Kleerup “Kleerup” (EMI Sweden) [Review]

    Chequerboard “Penny Black” (Lazybird)

Times New Viking “Rip It Off” (Matador) [Review]

    Jape “Ritual” (Co-Op)

10 other albums which I also like a lot

The Notwist “The Devil, You + Me” (City Slang)

The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock “The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock” (Transduction)

Our Brother The Native “Make Amends For We Are Merely Vessels (Fat Cat) [Review]

Pivot “O Soundtrack My Heart” (Warp)

Hercules & Love Affair “Hercules & Love Affair” (DFA) [Interview / review]

    Santogold “Santogold” (Downtown)

Lil Wayne “Tha Carter III” (Cash Money)

The Ting Tings “We Started Nothing” (Columbia)

She & Him “Volume One” (Merge/Domino) [Review]

Crystal Castles “Crystal Castles” (Last Gang) [Review]

And 10 other albums which could have made the last list but for the fact that a list of 10 albums can only have 10 albums

These New Puritans “Beat Pyramid” (Domino) [Interview / review]

    Ratatat “LP3″ (XL)

Thao “We Brave Bee Stings And All” (Kill Rock Stars) [Review]

Daedelus “Love to Make Music To” (Ninja Tune) [Review]

Paul Weller “22 Dreams” (Island) [Interview]

    Foals “Antidote” (Transgressive)

The Kills “Midnight Boom” (Domino) [Interview]

The Hold Steady “Stay Positive” (Rough Trade)

Cool Kids “The Bake Sale” (XL)

The Black Keys “Attack & Release” (Co-Op) [Review]

Enough about me, what about you? What new music has rocked your world this year so far?

The Crayonsmith album made me happy. The new Silver Jews album too, I’m a suckah for Berman, even happy married Berman. The Cut Copy album has been very good and I found myself liking the Felice Brothers modern-Dylan raspy album, great lyrics. Also Malkmus’s new one, for whom I appear to have a man-crush, and Neon Neon’s silver platter. The M83 album has failed to grow on me but deserves a mention for Kim + Jessie and Graveyard Girl alone. Those are my contributions.
Also, the new Albert Hammond Jr is good!

Strangely enough, I’m still enjoying Vampire Weekend, must have listened at least a hundred times and it’s as fresh as ever.
I’ll be back later kicking myself for forgetting others but We Are Knives, New Amusement, Chequerboard and Jape all bring on an attack of extraneous vowels: theeeey dooo iiiit toooo!

After a stellar 2007 this year hasn’t quite matched those standards with no truly brilliant records reaching my ears yet (I’m counting Bon Iver as last year in this instance) but of the records you haven’t mentioned I’m very taken with “street horrsing” and “alopecia”.

A good few of my favourites this year already listed but these are some of the others I haven’t quite been able to stop listening to…

    Mr Gnome- Deliver This Creature
Ane Brun- Changing Of The Seasons
    The Do- A Mouthful
    The Accidental- There Were Wolves
Halves- Haunt Me When I’m Drowsy…ok only an EP but long enough to be an album.

Another plus about ditching Sigla is that I get out of having to an annual Best of list of albums - hurrah!

So far, I’ve really enjoyed a large chunk of the ones you mention. Also really liked Camille, Jape, Nick Cave, Chequerboard, Isabel Cambell & Mark Lanegan, Wild Beasts, The Jimmy Cake, Vetiver, Martha Wainwright, Our Brother the Native, White Denim and lots more I’ve probably forgotten.

It’s been a very strong year so far for Irish albums.

Crystal Castles - meh. And Hercules and Love Affair is THE most over-rated album of the year.

I think Fleet Foxes could well be my album of 2008.

Can we also have a worst of? My vote goes to the Sugars…

It’s with great trepidation that I have left in Sinead’s last line considering how her flippant comment about TV shows elsewhere hijacked an entire thread.

My worst album so far? Wolf Parade. Man, that one sucked

And Gleeson, go back to H&LA. Stick it on, Play it loud. And start grooving. No soul, you lot, no soul.

Wolf Parade album worst of the year. Just a tad of hyperbole there Jim. It’s a seriously white shade of pale in comparison with Apologies but it’s far superior to certainly the Ting Tings, Foals and Hercules and the Love Affair. Three outstanding albums that haven’t been mentioned are the Dodos, Portishead and Beach House.

Apologies Jim (no pun intended) old flippant habits die hard. I can see your point but I do think that there are some excellent songs on At Mount Zoomer (Language City, Kissing the Beehive, the Grey Estates). I’d agree with you in part on the side project stuff. The Sunset Rubdown show certainly evidenced that Spencer has plenty of brilliant material at his fingertips. I agree with the additional mention of Born Ruffians, an album that normally I wouldn’t go for but I really enjoy. On the subject of stinkers I haven’t picked up the new My Morning Jacket album out of fear that it will ruin one of my favourite bands for me. I like Fleet Foxes but if that album turns out to be the best of the year then I’d have to say it’s been a weak one for music.

The Jimmy Cake’s ‘Spectre and Crown’ is the record of the year for me without question. I’ve been trying to cram two years work into five months this year and it’s been pretty intense so lyrics of any sort and screaming spolit brats in 1980s clothing (hello Ting Tings, Crystal Castles etc etc etc etc) are the last thing I need to distract me. ‘Spectre and Crown’ is a classical piece in leather trousers. An awesome disc in every regard and certainly the record that has defined and soundtracked the year so far for me. Whether it will have the same effect now I’m on the dole remains to be seen…

Very few other albums managed to make an impression but Paul Weller’s ‘22 Dreams’ is his best album in a long, long time. Jape’s ‘Ritual’ is alright and Goldfrapp’s ‘Seventh Tree’ has its moments. James’s ‘Hey Ma’ album, whilst utterly dreadful and cack-handed, has made me dig out their ‘Laid’ album so that can’t be bad, and Underworld’s ‘Breaking and Entering’ soundtrack, whilst so last year, has joined the Jimmy Cake on heavy rotation.

Best compilation that I’ve heard this year is ‘Indiecater’ as compiled by MP3hugger. Loads of bands I’d never heard of for only €4.50.

I was really surprised not to like the Herc & Love Affair album- loved the single but just wasn’t feeling the full album.

For alternative NY-based androgylicious drama-larks I’ve been obsessed with Kelley Polar “I need to hold on while the sky is falling”

Erykah Badu: New Amerykah (Part 1) is bonkers and wonderful in that order.

The first four songs of Clark’s “Turning Dragon” had me totally overexcited but the album doesn’t stand up to sustained listening.

I’m super excited at the prospect of the forthcoming Syclops/Maurice Fulton album on DFA. Loved “Where’s Jason’s K?”. A little more sanguine about The Juan McLean on the same album but “Happy House” is an early contender for tune of the year round mine too.

My Morning Jacket -Evil Urges is surely the album of the year. I’d add the Raconteurs to any list too. Also good releases from Laura Marling, Blood Red Shoes, Bonnie Prince Billy. Would also make a mention for Anthony Da Costa/Abbie Gardner - Bad Nights/Better Days. Absolutely brilliant duets. Matthew Ryan’s new album deserves a mention too. Have to disagree on Wolf Parade Jim. Good album, not amazing but definitely had some good tracks on it.

Sam Amidon’s album is a real grower, one for the Bon Iver fans (although not as good as ‘For Emma…’).
