His name is Gotye and he resides, oh yes, in a land down under.

What have the Australians ever done for us anyway? Do we need to go there?

Wouter DeBacker is Gotye, the dude in question here. Born in Belgium but hanging in Melbourne, he’s released a couple of albums for the Aussie market but it’s now time for him to go sing for his supper elsewhere. That’s the great thing about the internet, though. Just because you’re aiming stuff at one market doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit the jackpot somewhere else.

Sorry about that digression into market economics. Anyway, Gotye. This is taken from his current album “Like Drawing Blood” which has been doing the business down under since 2006. It’s full of tunes just like this, all big-hearted, soulful, psychedelic electronic dramas and dreams, the work of someone as much under the influence of Isaac Hayes and Ennio Morricone as he is under the cosh of The Avalanches and DJ Shadow. Some folks will compare this to Beck but Beck has not done anything as good as this in yonks. Just thrill at the majestic scope and reach and punch of it all.

The rather smashing video for the tune is below and, if you want more, get the album. BTW the mysterious Lull, the man who did wonderful things for Bloc Party’s “I Still Remember” with the help of a mini-orchestra of music-boxes, has remixed this tune and you can hear the Lull take on “Heart’s A Mess” here.
