    Now, this is interesting

    Jim Carroll

Remember the bit of a kerfuffle here the other week about MCD charging €44 to see Hecules & Love Affair at The Academy in June? Remember how we pointed out that you could see Andrew Butler and his boyz for £12 (€15) in Glasgow and just a tenner (€12.50) in Nottingham?

Well, have a look at this. Tickets are now €30 for the gig. Yes, they’re still on the high side compared to the UK shows but they have been reduced.

Is this the first time ticket prices have gone down rather than up? Is this a sign of an impending recession?

Maybe it’s MCD’s equivalent of a spring sale. Surely it’s not because they sold zero tickets for the show and took action to prevent an empty room?

Actually, did anyone pay €44? And will they get a refund?

Also, when was the change made? I got a press release last Thursday still advertising the old price.

    • petee says:

wow. that’s a bit more like it. i think it’s a case of mcd not wanting an empty gig

    • JD says:

According to my sources within Aer Lingus, anyone who bought online at €44 should have known that this price was incorrect. Accordingly, they are not entitled to any money back.

    • Jim Carroll says:

JD – I can’t even begin to imagine how MCD will explain this one away. Thing is, the price was clearly stated on Ticketmaster, press releases AND radio ads. Or else we were all imagining things? Hold on, that’s it, it was a collective flight of fancy by the Irish gig-going community. We imagined it. It never happened.

    • Peter says:

MCD. The Bobby Ewing of Irish promoters.

    • probably just not sold, due to high price for a band no one has heard of…
      …great!!

    • Ivor says:

probably just not sold, due to high price for a band no one has heard of…

More likely the fact that the guest star of the album, Ant’nee ain’t gonna be there.

    • Ivor says:

Jim, seen the NYC ATP line up? 30-act lineup, curated by both MBV and ATP including:

      My Bloody Valentine
Built to Spill performing Perfect From Now On
Meat Puppets performing Meat Puppets II
      Thurston Moore performing Psychic Hearts
Tortoise performing Millions Now Living Will Never Die
      Shellac
      Mogwai
      Polvo
      Fuck Buttons
      Autolux
      The Drones
      Low
      Wooden Shjips
      Edan with Dagha
      Thee Silver Mount Zion Orchestra

    • Ivor says:

Is it the law that Mogwai have to play every ATP?

    • Jim Carroll says:

      mogwai: are still shite

    • petee says:

      blasphomy

    • UnaRocks says:

      “mogwai: are still shite”

      zing!

    • Neill says:

      Mogwai: ace!

    • Ciaran says:

the price has been changed since at least firday evening. I had a look around 6pm when i checked my mail and it was down to 30….

    • Steve K says:

Sounds odd… but despite quite liking Hercules and Love Affair still not tempted at €30. Feel as if MCD deserve a smack in the mouth for this one.

Also, did anyone go to see Crystal Castles last night? I had to leave because of the noise, though it was a great gig. But full of kids, jam packed, and they loved it. I had no idea they had this kind of following… were they a guest on Skins or something????

    • gardenhead says:

      mogwai: are unfuckinbelievable

Imagine, they have dropped the Herc and Love affair Price by the cost of one foggy notions gig, and it still costs the same as two foggy notions gigs.

    • Paul says:

For me this just provides further proof of how much profit the big promoters are making from ripping us off with ridiculous prices.

And i agree – Mogwai are nothing special.

    • JD says:

      Mogwai are nothing special.

So long as you don’t feed them after midnight.

    • Rasputin says:

Jim, it’s not just Hot Press who lift stories from here and don’t credit them!

      http://www.phantom.ie/content/view/1505/104/

    • Jim Carroll says:

Ciaran – I heard radio ads with the new price the other night so I think it has been a very recent development

Steve K – Interestingly, all the things I’ve read about the Crystal Castles gig last night went about the audience being full of kids. Dunno why people get so worked up about that. As long as the kids are stomping away at it, I’d be happy. Better a room full of kids than the dry shites who were at the recent Holy Fuck gig

gardenhead – exactly. You’d still get to see three Foggy or Umack or Forever shows for that

Paul – but this time, no-one was obviously biting, hence the price reduction

      JD – har, har

Rasputin – I’m sure that will be rectified…..

    • Ciaran says:

Jim, it was definitely changed by Friday evening, and I even read earlier on another message board a post about it being dropped, and that post was at 12:25pm last Friday….which sort of negates Rasputin’s point too…
i presume they realised that nothing was selling and then dropped it but didn’t get around to changing the ad.

    • Jim Carroll says:

Ciaran – As a matter of interest, which messageboard? I’m curious about the timeline on this – ie when was the change made and why were there still press releases going out on Thursday with the old price on them?

    • Secret Peter says:

Now lads lets not turn this into a discussion about mogwai…they are the bee’s pajamas though. Seriously, what i would do to see them live.

    • adam says:

mogwai are amazing live!saw ‘em at the scalectrix nicnac a few years ago and they were fantastic. betcha they wouldn’t cost 30 euros to see, if they ever play here again..

    • Ian says:

It’s still €44 to expensive to make me consider going to see them.

    • adnans says:

Been going to gigs from other promoters that even €30 is too steep for a band who are slightly new to the scene.

Unless they have a killer support slot its going to have a hard time selling out before gig time.

I love their music but that’s pretty much 1/3 of what I’ve paid to see 20+ bands on a single day in Barcelona on the same weekend.

    • Jim Carroll says:

thanks ciaran – see other post for latest update with this one. The price reduction is all due to the sponsor, apparently.
