Tune of the Week – “I Like Music”

Bet you weren’t expecting this. Go on, you were not. You have an idea in your head about the Loose and it didn’t have any elbow room for this slice of prime, slinky, funky pop pie.
See, people have all kinds of preconceptions about the Loose. My favourite story about them involves a bunch of radio DJs and producers from a Dublin station who fell head over heels in love with the band on the back of their music. Proper order, see. Those jocks played the Loose’s tunes day and night and the following day and night too. This was the band for them. They were the toast of the station. The radioheads then booked them for a big show their station was putting on. Turned up en masse to see the band. Rubbed their hands with glee. The, their jaws dropped when the Loose strolled onstage. Whatever they were expecting to see, they were not expecting THAT.
A couple of weeks ago, I saw the Loose rock a big room in a small town. That is what the band do best – they play live and send you home sweating. At the Eurosonic festival in Groningen, the band owned that lovely big room in the Grand Theatre at the top of the town square. People grooved because the band had tunes galore. They may not have heard those tunes before, but that doesn’t matter – the Loose had groove. It was the kind of show to get festival bookers and promoters muttering under their breath and thinking of summer stages to put the band on. I don’t know if they got many bookings on the back of that, but they certainly earned some catering tickets from it.
This is from the band’s new album, their third. I really liked their first one (“This Is The Tomb of the Juice”) but thought their second album (“Aaagh!”) was unfocused and unfunky and as much of a messas that title. By the sound of “I Like Music”, they’ve got their mojo back. That new album could be quite a cracker.
