Brilliant news. I had heard that they were lined up for that other festival you were talking about at Russborough House but that promoter was obviously talking through his arse. They’re perfect for the Picnic

Jesus, I’m now immediately really worried that they’ll be put on in one of the tents which will be ridiculously packed out and loads of people who want to see them won’t get anywhere near it (CF. Beastie Boys, Modest Mouse). If anyone from Electric Picnic is reading: PUT THEM ON THE MAIN STAGE!

Ham and cheese toasties all round! I hope they play the Foggy Notions tent.

According to Hot Press, the high-jinks and japes enjoyed by Primal Scream and the delerious Jesus and Mary Chain was the clincher for MBV. It was really apparent that JAMC were having loads of fun last year wasn’t it? Under no circumstances what-so-ever were they there just to pick up the cheque…

My Bloody Valentine were brilliant – in 1991. Doubt if this will be all that good. Remember the Jesus and Mary Chain last year? Their music isn’t festival music anyway.

‘A bunch of over 30’s getting excited about a band that last released an album, 17 yrs ago?’

Billy,I’m one of those over-thirties you speak about and I am absolutely and unashamedly excited about this and don’t care what anyone thinks.

‘I stood next to Kevin Shields at a gig in London a couple of months ago. It was like seeing a mythical beast out and about’

Me too. I walked straight up to him at a Mogwai gig in London last summer, shook his hand (twice) and we spoke for about ten minutes about Mogwai and MBV’s upcoming plans. He was an absolute gent, really unassuming, down-to-earth guy. Going top see them twice in London in June and the EP date is really going to be the icing on the cake.

I think MBV at EP is a major coup for them. It’s the equivalent of Kraftwerk playing in 2005- A really special, big-name act that will have will have everyone talking and making plans…something EP lacked last year.

Stick them on one of the wide open big stages and have them play as the sun drops. Thats what I’m talking about.

Am also the wrong side of 30, so old enough to remember excitement (and hype) about MBV first time round. Love the records but saw them play SFX in 1992…and it was a massive disappointment for everyone there. Will still check them out at EP but only for reasons of nostalgia and not if they headline on main stage. What would be the point of all that complexity blowing away with the breeze?

When asked about a possible Electric Picnic bow alongside MBV Mark Morrison declared:
“Let all the people know, I’m back to rock the show”.

It’s the biggest shock relating to “The Mack” since some lad in a Turban stole his bird while he was stuck in the jammer.

Oh please not the atmosphere-and-acoustics-draining main stage. In one of the big ‘ol tents there might be some hope of holding that frail sound together. Is C O’C going to be there? – there was a rumour it would only be three fourths of the band.

Agree with the sentiments that MBV playing at a festival stage would be a waste of time. Somewhere enclosed like the Olympia would be much better. The sound will just get blown away in the open air. If they try to put them on in a tent then the tent will be a total crush/crowd hazard, and you wont hear the end of people griping and bitching about how they couldnt get in.

There’s always been loads of talk about MBV that materialised into nothing in previous years. So I’m still inclined to take this news with an enormous wad of salt.

    “that frail sound”

Frail?? Anyone I know who saw MBV live back in the day said it was the loudest most punishing concert they’ve ever been too. Enough ear-splitting feedback to make your stomach churn.

I don’t think the main stage is going to swallow up the bands subtle dynamics.

Peter Saw ‘em a few times, indoors and out – they were kinda lost on Reading main stage – but ace every other time. Not quite as noisy as people say they were.

    “that frail sound”

That was my comment and I was referring to the complex and likely-to-fall-apart nature of the music when played live. This is a band that nearly bankrupted a record company with the expense of trying to get their sound correct (acoustic tents inside studios and so on). The gigs were always loud, but more often that not the sound quality was not reproducible live. That’s what I meant by frail. There’s no way in hell that MBV will sound good on an outdoor stage. I was at the SFX gig – it was loud fair enough, but the sound was terrible – a muddy, indistinct mess – and that was indoors. A mate saw them in McGonigles (God be with the days) and he said the sound was excellent, but McGonigles was tiny…

Would much prefer to see them at an indoor venue (but then maybe thats because I am the wrong side of 40!) I enjoyed McGonagles more than the SFX, Queens was ok. Don’t think I don’t think Kevin was happy with the sound in either McGonagles or Queens.
McGonagles :) , anyone else at Loop, .. Sonic Youth ..(memories..)
