Memo to news desks: you left out one Irish Oscar nomination, dudes
Jim Carroll
Strange how so many breaking news sources (including our own and RTE) have overlooked one Irish nomination for this year’s Oscars. Something else for the man himself to fume about. No wonder he’s turning into Van Morrison….
But enough with the churlishness. Congrats to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for getting a nomination for Best Song for “Falling Slowly” from Once.
UPDATE Both news stories above have now been updated to include the Once nomination.

They’ll win it.
bummed about the poor showing for Into The Wild. Man , I hope Hal Hoolbrook wins that supporting award.
Am delighted for Hansard and Irglova, off to the Bookies now to bet on Falling Slowly. Nice little earner I reckon.
Well done Glen & mar, thats great news.
And I was amazed too to hear the RTE News at One gushing about the two “Irish” oscars and not mentioning this. It seems the same oversight applied to newsdesks everywhere in medialand today, as you’ve pointed out. Tsk, tsk.
Newstalk missed it as well when they were discussing it on air.
Was listening to the news at one, and heard about saoirse ronan, and assumed that hansard hadn’t being nominated until i got a text..bizarre..congrats to all of ‘em is what i say..are we going to get a white suit moment?
I wonder if Glen will look more uncomfortable in a suit on Oscar night then Elliott did. Then again, if they do the same as the Golden Globes there might not even be a ceremony.
Great minds Ciaran. HI-5.
Apparently Glen was rocking a very swanky suit in the Feb 2008 issue of US Vogue so he was getting in the practice.
No surprise I suppose – Hot Press too have slept on this news story. Glen and Mar probably need to take out an ad first.
That means they’ll perform on the night too then (assuming the ceremony goes ahead). There won’t be a dry eye in the house!
Good to see Wikipedia have their priorities in order also…
“Hansard has appeared on screen as the principal character parodied by Irish music/comedy Web site Eyebrowy.com. and as the lead in the 2007 movie Once.”
Interesting to note that the IP address for comment no 11 here and that Wikipedia change are one and the same
Nice one Jim!
As if the Ginger Whinger’s ego needed more inflating.. Christ, does the Academy have any idea what they’ve DONE? Call Lonely Planet, we’ve found the man who’s the exception to the rule.
RTE’s Sinéad Crowley on the News At One also said that Daniel Day-Lewis had been nominated for the slightly less definite “There Might Be Blood”…
Oh, also, should point out that the nominations are not all released in one go. The thirteen or so ‘main’ categories are read out at the press conference and the others (including Best Song) follow shortly afterwards. Even IMDb.com didn’t have the scoop on Hansard/Irglova for about an hour after the press conference.
catherine – you sure about that? I logged onto the Academy site at 1.40pm as it was being announced on the RTE News at One and all the nominations were there in glorious technicolour.

Hey, The Frames aren’t the only ones with a shed load of units to shift to rich americans who are new to the cult of Glen. But it’s the “…and as the lead in the 2007 movie Once” that provides the ironic punchline, which we’re sadly unable to take credit for.
It must be a strange rollercoaster ride for Hansard – you toil away at your music for years striving for recognition then, suddenly, as a result of an ACTING ROLE your music becomes world famous. Life’s little peculiarities. Good luck to him.
Anyone know what other songs are nominated?
Jim – I guess the IMDb folks (and RTE, and ireland.com) were cribbing off d’telly broadcast so!
Catherine – it just shows the perils of breaking news!
Just seen the list of other songs nominated. Hansard has a very good chance of winning. They get to perform the song on the night too, don’t they? …Hansard meet your audience of ” a billion” people!

Will he get to do a lengthy preamble about what the song is about?
I’d imagine the more important Oscars nominations, namely Male & Female leads, supporting roles, director and films were first off the wire.
Not to (overly) detract from the honour of an Academy Nod in any capacity, but in terms of Hollywood newsworthiness, Original Song is way down the pecking order, along with best voice coach and best typefaced used in end credits.

*prays for cancellation of Oscars*
I can’t wait to hear him say “Thanks a lot Folks” on the night. Seriously though good luck to them- “Once” really is the little film that could.
Fuck the begrudgers. I hope Glen and Yoko win it.
It’s a shite song though really, isn’t it?
ian, hi five indeed! congrats to the atonement cinematorgrapher too for a well warranted nomination..
The more I think about this, the more I hope Glen wins it, not least for the entertainment value of watching the begrudgers choking with indignation.
Jim, you say ‘begrudgers’ like it’s a bad thing
I hope Glen wins too… but I’m confused about its eligibility: it featured on the last Frames album, so doesn’t that mean it’s NOT an original song written especially for the film (as I understand the rules to be). Or are there exceptions re: sales, releases in certain territories, etc…?
Just looked at the nominations in that category – Once has a really good chance – there are 5 songs in the category and 3 are from the one film – “Enchanted” which could well lead to fans of that movie to split their votes three ways. That said Paddy Power has “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted as 5-6 favourite.
So delighted for Glen and Marketa. But I hope that John Carney takes it as a compliment too. It was his vision and risk-taking that made this very intimate and special movie. And it is the movie that got the music noticed in America
I’ve been digging around and I’m not so convinced that ‘Falling Slowly’ is eligible: ‘The Cost’ was released in Ireland on September 22, 2006. ‘Once’ was screened at the Galway Film Fleadh on 15 July 2006 but only went on general release (what counts for the Oscars) in early 2007. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, because I sincerely hope Glen wins) the rules aren’t so clear re: release dates of songs compared to release of films:
http://www.oscars.org/80academyawards/rules/rule16.html
I’ve written a bit more about it here: http://www.cluas.com/indie-music/Discussion/tabid/63/forumid/3/postid/45509/view/topic/Default.aspx
Not sure of the rules but Elliot Smith’s “Miss Misery” was also on an earlier album of his and was re-released for the soundtrack.
I’ve since been informed by Rev Jules that another recording of the song can be released, just so long as the original recording for the film is not released – i.e. the version of ‘Falling Slowly’ on ‘Once’ is not the same version as on ‘The Cost’.
