11 things I learned this weekend

    Jim Carroll

    (1) Jockette Jessica Kurten is not a happy camper when it comes to the media pointing out that her horse failed a dope test.

    (2) The Rolling Stones played in a big field in Co Meath and everyone went home happy. Bad news for Joe and his researchers, though we hear they might have a story if they knew where to go looking for it.

    (3) A lot of hurling commentators are still fuming that Waterford got knocked out of this year’s championship by Limerick. Apparently, the Deises were set to be this year’s “people’s champions” until the lads from the other side of the Carnahalla bridge went into action. The “people’s champions”? Certainly not the people round here who never warmed to Waterford’s badge-kissing brand of hurling. They got beaten by a better team. Get over it. At least that “Dan the Man” numptiedom is over till next summer.

    (4) The new album from Menomena is so darn hot.

    (5) Fernando Torres is going to have a great season – and Chelsea will always benefit from dodgy referees.

    (6) Nik Cohn knew his beat. The Derry-born writer’s “Ball the Wall” collection contains one must-read pop culture zinger after another.

    (7) Bill Deedes RIP

    (8) Dont forget that the Festival of World Cultures takes over Fun Laoghaire next week. Rachid Taha is playing on Sunday.

    (9) That Battles album “Mirrored” sound bigger and bolder and brighter and brasher with every listen. They play Dublin’s Tripod on Friday. Go on, you know you want to go.

    (10) Malahide is a lovely place to be when the sun shines, as it did for a couple of hours yesterday.

    (11) The Some Days Never End fest sounds – and looks – better and better. More news soon. Is that enough of a tease for you?

    • Pedro says:

      4. Totally disagree. Felt really let-down by this record.

      5. Torres is a scummy bastard. Even if he does have a couple of decent games, it was still silly money to pay for an unproven striker who happened to have a couple of good games in thr World Cup. Spanish strikers can’t cut it at Liverpool. Morientes had an amazing Champions League on loan at monaco – Benitez buys him for the scouse scum on the back of it and he does NOTHING in the premiership. Torres to break a leg by Christmas.

      9. Told you so.

      11. Stop being a fucker and list some stuff!

    • So's yer mudder says:

“The Rolling Stones played in a big field in Co Meath and everyone went home happy.” Wha’? Thought this was brutal. Terrible sound and hardly saw a person smile all day. Bet you were in the prawn sandwich seats. Must try harder with the learnin Jim. “Hello is that liveline?”

“They got beaten by a better team” Yer right about this though. Gwan Limerick.

    • Jim Carroll says:

      Pedro

      5. Come back in may and we’ll see

      9. Yeah

      11. Hah!

      so’s yer mudder

I wasnt at the gig but I’m pleased to see the lack of people fuming about this (well, bar you). I’ve had enough of people giving out about gigs this summer. Up with the positivity!

    • Pedro says:

You’re not a Liverpool fan are ya James?

When is the Picnic being leaked? If you’re not going to bother leaking IMMA then leak the Piccie.

    • Jim Carroll says:

      What Picnic? What leak?

    • aidan says:

(8)Rachid Taha is brilliant – his live show ROCKS!!! Go and see him this weekend, FFS!! Is it a free outdoor show? (Even his version of ‘Rock the Casbah’ is great – and Mick Jones often joins him onstage to play it)

    • JP says:

Triksta by Nik Cohn is an amazing read

    • Major Alfonso says:

      (8) I’m completely gleeful about this, I wanted to see him last time he played but it got re-scheduled due to the rioting in Paris and I couldn’t make it. Hope it doesn’t piss, but I’ll be eating ice cream and smiling even if it does. Fanfare Ciocarlia should be good too, theres nothing like a funky brass band. I’d better get mobilising some people.

    • Jim Carroll says:

aidan/major – yes, Rachid’s gig in Fun Laoghaire is FREE. He’s onstage at 5.30pm on the big stage at Newtownsmith Green.

JP – yes, Triksta’s a great yarn altogether. Cohn is an interesting cat – I interviewed him when Triksta came out and he had loads to say.

    • JP says:

Must look up that interview on the site. Yeh Triksta really impressed. They brought out a 2nd edition after Hurrican Katrina with updated material on New Orleans

    • Jim Carroll says:

I think the interview ran Dec 05 or Jan 06 – it was after Katrina anyway and he was talking about going back to the city.

    • Ian says:

      5) There is an argument that could be made that United and Liverpool both bought the wong striker in the summer. United could have done with an up top player like Torres and Tevez is a genuine second striker type (it’s mad how quickly a term invented by PES has entered the lexicon) unlike many of the players Rafa has tried to put in there. He’s a class player though is Torres, I think they bought a good ‘un.

Eduardo to outscore them all though :P

    • Jim Carroll says:

well, if Torres scores as many goals for us as he did for los colchoneros over the last few years, i’ll be happy.

    • Pedro says:

You are a Liverpool fan? Jesus, you kept that quiet (I would too if I supported the scum).

      It was a definite penalty.

Man of the match performance by Rob Styles yet again. At the very least – it has sparked up another Rafa/Morinho war of words.

    • Fergal says:

You frightened me by saying that Cohn “knew” his beat – I thought you were linking to an obit. Even better (says I) than Triksta is Heart of The World, his book about Broadway

    • Jim Carroll says:

Pedro – Yep, I’m a Red. And it was no penalty, dude. Though I have to say, as some Villa fans (OK, fan, theres not many of them) pointed out, we werent complaining bout Rob Styles last week.

    • Jim Carroll says:

Fergal – sorry bout that, Cohn is still very much alive and well and living in Long Island. I must find that interview. “Heart Of The World” is truly amazing, one of the most imaginative NYC books i’ve read, and his book on England, “Yes We Have No”, is also worth a read.

But I’m finding loads and loads of quotable stuff re-reading “Ball the Wall”. His stuff on mod style and etiquette is just fantastic reportage.

    • ds says:

      “Dan the Man” numptiedom

brilliant and so true. c’mon limerick!

    • Jim Carroll says:

ds – yeah, glad to see the back of that nonsense for another year.

But I think kilkenny will break richie bennis’s heart. They didnt move out of first gear against galway and they still decimated them. The less said about the second wexford mis-match the better. True, maybe, they haven’t had a hard game this season but they’ll know how to deal with the Shannonsiders. Still, it will be a grand day out for my neighbours in limerick.

Here, i assume they’re getting Dolores O’Riordan to do a new county song? I hear she’s not very busy at the moment.

    • Shane says:

      http://live95fm.ie/linklog.asp?id=1451
terrible, but the only one I know of at the moment. Thankfully Limerick you’re a lady seems to be dying out. According to local press, in the ‘essential’ early morning mass pre-waterford match, the priest surprised all by finishing with ‘there is an isle’. Good omen.
It is a pity Limericks hip hop community don’t come together and try to emulate Eamon Carr’s old skool classic ‘Mighty Men of Meath’(1988)
      ” We’re lean
      we’re mean
      we’re the Meath Machine”

Regards Dolores, she lives down the road from o shaughnessy so maybe they could hook up for a duet.

    • Jim Carroll says:

Has anyone got a recording of that Eamon Carr banger??? I must ask the legend himself the next time I see him.

    • Shane says:

I remember that he took over for the holiday period from Dave Fanning and proceeded to do hip hop lessons on the radio like retelling blow by blow the whole Kool Moe Dee versus LL Cool J saga. Great stuff. Anyway he also took to doing occasional raps on the aforementioned. I know there was a line with Mick Lyons in there as well. I think he was looking for sponsorship to release it, I don’t know did it ever happen.
Although he did put some funk into Irish sports tunes with his ‘oh ah Paul Mcgrath’ release a few years later.

    • Jim Carroll says:

EC is God. We had him on the choice music prize judging panel last year and he was a total hoot – the vow of confidentiality we all took prevents me from repeating some of his lines.

He used to do stand-ins too for Donal Dineen and John Kelly on Radio Ireland/Today FM and he was fantastic. Always – always – knew how to get from A to B via F, M, P, T and Z.

His “Put ‘Em Under Pressure” is still the BEST irish sports tune of all. Go Eamo!

    • ds says:

yes i fear you could be right Jim, thinking KK will do it but it’s nice to dream (and hope!). Would be good for the game in general really if LK could do it! Can’t imagine Dolores is busy at all really but doubt she could produce anything in anyway inspiring for the this.. Maybe we could use her to scare the demons away

    • Catherine says:

      11. Come on Jim, it’s been two days now, just a little hint, pretty please? Maybe you could answer this yes or no question: is there any truth to the rumour that My Bloody Valentine are playing?
