  • iPad 2 unveiled

    March 2, 2011 @ 8:46 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

So there you have it. A thinner, lighter, more powerful iPad is on the way. And not months into the future – March 11th in the US, March 25th for 26 other countries (Ireland presumably included). And not only that but an updated iOS and iPad apps for iMovie and Garage Band are also on the way.

Apple really knows how to put on a show. The appearance of Steve Jobs on stage kicked off the event, and as usual, there was little modesty to be found.

But why should there be? The iPad has sold 15 million units in nine months. It’s generated $9.5 billion for the company in revenue. And it’s prettying wiped the memory of the previous generation of tablets out.

So what does the iPad 2 give us? Dual core processor for a start – faster operation, but the battery life remains the same. Graphics power has also been improved.

There are also two cameras – front and rear facing – for video conferencing, FaceTime calls, etc.

The iPhone 4′s gyroscope is also in there too.

It’s a third thinner – making it thinner than the iPhone 4 – and will be available in black and white from launch.

New accessories include the HDMI output and the smart case (magnets, fits itself to the iPad etc).

When iOS 4.3 comes, you’ll be able to share tour iPhone’s mobile Internet connection wirelessly with other devices.

What didn’t we get? The rumours that didn’t materialise:

    A micro USB port.
Expandable storage through an SD card slot.
    The Retina display.
    Any larger capacities.

The prices, however, will also stay the same.

  • 3 Ireland and the Cydia block

    February 14, 2011 @ 8:10 am | by Ciara O'Brien

Yesterday, it emerged through Twitter (via @stroughtonsmith on my own feed, and others) that Cydia was being blocked from being accessed on 3 Ireland and 3 UK’s network.

Why? Well, I asked. And given that you can only fit 140 characters on Twitter, here’s the full response from 3 Ireland.

“3 was not aware that Cydia was being blocked and the fact that it is being blocked is an error. It is due to the 3rd party internet filtering system we use called Bluecoat. Bluecoat is used to block sites of an adult nature.

“We are now working on getting the Cydia servers unblocked and this should be done as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers.”

Anything else while we’re at it?

UPDATE: Cydia should be unblocked now, Redsn0w has also been flagged.

  • CES: 3D gets a second shot

    January 13, 2011 @ 11:39 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

There was a bit of deja vu at CES. Like last year, 3D was big news. But this time, there was a more personal slant to it.

Every manufacturer seemed determined to bring 3D to consumers – whether you like it or not.

  • Vegas!

    January 6, 2011 @ 6:03 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

It’s that time of year again. The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas today, and I’ve been sent over to cover it. Which pretty much means I play with gadgets for the next few days and report back.

    Tough job.

  • What is Apple planning for iTunes?

    November 16, 2010 @ 12:25 am | by Ciara O'Brien

If you’ve visited Apple’s website today, you can’t have missed the massive tease that Apple is currently running on its homepage.

The speculation is that there is some announcement due on streaming or cloud services for iTunes, although the smart money is on a Beatles related announcement tomorrow, a glaring omission from the iTunes catalogue at the moment.

  • Aaaaand we’re back.

    September 27, 2010 @ 5:01 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

So after a brief period of less than regualr activity (for various reasons, far too dull to get into here), my new resolution is to update this more regularly. Honestly.

    Let’s see how this goes.

  • Google Instant goes live

    September 9, 2010 @ 8:58 am | by Ciara O'Brien

In case you missed it, Google has put the foot down on its search engine and ramped up the speed. Google Instant shows results as you type, predicting what you want to search for and displaying the results instantly.

  • iOS4: your impressions?

    June 23, 2010 @ 8:42 am | by Ciara O'Brien

It took the best part of an hour and a half (some swearing, a little pleading and a lot of frustration) but I’ve updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS4.

  • Tech tools: Hammacher Schlemmer Solar-powered iPod Speaker

    May 21, 2010 @ 3:45 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

Essential summer kit: sun cream, sandals and some sort of music. Or, in Ireland, unmbrella, sensible footwear and some sort of music. Either way, this solar powered iPod speaker could help you out.
