The end of an era
It’s the end of an era. Last night Steve Jobs announced he was standing down from his role as chief executive of Apple, and said he would become chairman instead.

Ever felt the need to take your iPhone for a dip? I may be surgically attached to my phone, but I don’t think even I would go this far. Besides the fact that I don’t really swim (I drown better) it’s putting a lot of trust in some plastic and seals.
There are practical aspects to the DryCase, of course. Now you can take your delicate electronics to the beach, out fishing or skiing without worrying that it will get wet. And we all know water means death to electronics.
Still, it also removes a cast iron excuse for being out of contact. Your choice.
Just a quick post to flag this. If you rely on your iPhone as an alarm clock, you might have noticed it’s not working as it should.
A bug appears to have knocked out one-off alarms. Of course, most people weren’t aware of the issue until it was too late. Angry users are complaining on Apple’s discussion boards about the flaw, which even affects devices running the latest software.
The way around it at the moment is to set recurring alarms. Apparently setting the date forward to January 3rd also kills the bug. Not much good to those who were running late this morning, but should keep you on time until Apple fixes the bug, or we actually get to January 3rd – more likely the latter.
Possibly one of the most useful apps I’ve come across this month for the iPhone is HulloMail. It’s voicemail, but with a difference. Replacing your network operator’s voicemail service, it’s similar to the visual voicemail that was a much talked about feature of the original iPhone.
Another fitness application has launched for mobiles, but it’s not just limited to iPhones. The Adidas Micoach app is available for the iPhone, but can also be downloaded to Blackberry devices.
Have a HTC Desire phone? If so, the Android 2.2 update is about to hit your handset – if you haven’t already got it.
It’s all about Apple this week. The iPhone has just gone on sale, and to all those who were queuing at 7am in the rain this morning, I admire your dedication because there’s nothing that would make me stand in wet weather at that hour of the morning without whining. Lots.
If you’re still weighing up the costs, here they are.
According to the US copyright office, unlocking your smartphone is no longer illegal. The office granted the practice, known as jailbreaking, an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
As you can predict, Apple is not amused.
If you’re heading down to Oxegen, you need this app.
The official Oxegen app includes an interactive schedule so you don’t miss your favourite acts, a check list of what you’ll need and a map that links in with Facebook so you can share your location with your friends and track them down.
Good news folks. Apparently there’s no real problem with the iPhone 4′s antenna. Instead, it’s a software thing.
