    February 7, 2011 @ 2:46 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

If you’ve been waiting for a PlayStation phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play could very well be it. It’s the first Sony PlayStation certified smartphone, based on Android.

More detail is being promised in a few days, with an announcement due to coincide with Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 13th.

Here’s a slightly creepy video introduction in the meantime.

  • Review: Dead Space 2

    February 3, 2011 @ 10:25 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

When it comes to horror films, I’m a bit of a wuss. I try to avoid watching them late at night, or when I’m going to be alone for any length of time, mainly because it inevitably ends in nightmares at 3am. But I do it anyway.

Games are no different. And Dead Space 2 is possibly one of the eeriest games I’ve played in a long time.

  • Playstation comes to Android

    January 27, 2011 @ 12:58 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

Although we’ve all been waiting for the official announcement on a Playstation phone, Sony made an interesting announcement today. The games firm is to make its Playstation content available on mobile phones through the Playstation Suite.

The catch? It’s only for Android phones. Bad luck for iPhone users.

  • The week that….

    January 21, 2011 @ 11:22 am | by Ciara O'Brien

Google announced it was replacing existing chief executive Eric Schmidt with its co-founder Larry Page. Schmidt will become executive chairman of the firm. A form of executive musical chairs.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said he was taking some time off . Tim Cook will take over the day to day running of the tech company while Jobs is on medical leave. Investors worry what will happen without him. The rest of us just wait for Macworld and listen to the increasingly noisy iPad 2 rumour mill.

Nintendo finally revealed the launch date for its 3DS, plus a line-up of games. March 25th for Europe, the 27th for the US.  Trying to work up enthusiasm for this. At €270, it’s a bit of a struggle.

Facebook unveiled a new mobile version of its site that can be used on regular phones. Now you have no excuse for ignoring your aunt’s friend’s daughter’s best friend when she sends you a friend request.

  • CES: Avatar for Kinect

    January 7, 2011 @ 5:44 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

Microsoft unveiled the latest function for Kinect – an avatar that mimics how your face moves. Not impressed? Take a look at the video.

Avatar Kinect is a chat function that tracks your facial expressions, how your mouth moves, even if you raise your eyebrows. It will be interesting to see how this works for everyone else, and where else Kinect will go.

Avatar Kinect is a free service for Xbox Live Gold members, and is coming this spring.

  • Out with the old…

    December 31, 2010 @ 8:15 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

With the end of 2010 looming, I’m getting ready for a whole new round of games in the coming year. But first, here’s a few of my top games of the year. What are your top 10?

  • Andy 1, PlayStation3 0

    December 21, 2010 @ 10:56 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

So you have a Playstation 3. It has pride of place in the living room, usually under a fairly large high definition TV. It’s safe to say you love it. You play with it most days. Your family and friends dread when there’s talk of yet another must-have game because they know it’ll mean you monopolising the TV for hours on end, caught up in Call of Duty/Army of Two/Medal of Honor. IN fact, if there was any sort of emergency in the house – fire, flood – it’s a toss-up between your family and your Playstation as to what you’d save first. (We never say it, but deep down, we suspect it might be the PS3. )

If something happened to it, it would be close to disastrous.

Then one fateful day, it dies. And not only does it die, it dies in the middle of Black Ops. Which not only means you’ve probably lost all your hard-won progress in Black Ops up until now (hours upon hours for nothing), but also your favourite game of the moment is stuck inside the PS3. And no matter how hard you try, that’s not coming out.

  • Angry Birds to move to consoles

    November 25, 2010 @ 2:39 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

It’s possibly one of the most addictive mobile games out there, and now the Angry Birds have their sights firmly set on consoles.

Not content with dominating the iPhone, iPad, Android and Symbian phones, Rovio is planning to migrate the mobile game to your living room. It’s a path that games like Plants vs Zombies have also tried, and while they can’t compete with the likes of Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed in the graphics stakes, they certainly hook players in.

I’m a long-time fan of the game, although I’ve not yet managed to get the full three stars throughout all the levels, despite playing for so long I’ve probably increased my chances of RSI in years to come. And since my iPhone decided to stage a silent protest earlier this week, it looks like I’m back to the beginning anyway.

It’s not yet known when the birds will make it into console format – some time next year apparently – so in the meantime, have some (slightly sweary) Angry Birds peace talks.

  • Tech tools: Kinect for Xbox

    November 12, 2010 @ 11:37 am | by Ciara O'Brien

Last night I found myself trying to teach a virtual pet how to sit, play dead and roll over. If you haven’t seen any of the ads for Kinect yet, this involves rolling on the floor in front of a camera that is the latest controller for the Xbox.

    Dignified it is not.

  • Gamer Expo cancelled

    October 19, 2010 @ 1:20 pm | by Ciara O'Brien

In case anyone was thinking of heading down to Gamer Expo next weekend – change your plans. The event has been cancelled.

Only two days ago, I got an email to remind me that it was coming up, not to miss it. A short message from the promoters today said the event had been called off due to “fire safety issues”.  It doesn’t go into much more detail than that, saying only that the promoter is hoping to reschedule, but full refunds will be given.

    Maybe try Game On instead?
