    My new favourite app!

    Ciara O'Brien

There’s a holiday looming, whcih means only one thing: my usual last minute, half hearted effort to get fit, brought on by panic at the thought of having to wear shorts for a week.

So with that in mind, I’ve been checking out some new apps. My new favourite: Zombies, Run!

It’s a game that also tracks your fitness. Brilliant: you get fooled into running further in the mistaken belief that it’s fun. Two thumbs up so far.

The story: it’s a post-apocalyptic world, and the zombies are everywhere. You’ve been drafted in to help out at one of the camps in the hot zone, but something goes wrong (involving a rocket launcher) and before you know it, you’re in the middle of the whole thing, running for your life.

As you run, the game breaks into your regular running playlists with radio broadcasts and announcements, and the odd zombie grunt and moan to alert you that the undead are on your trail. You pick up items along the way that are useful to the camp; how you allocate them is your business.

I am terrified of zombies. I haven’t watched the entire first series of The Walking Dead yet because I know I’ll inevitably wake up after a screaming nightmare, convinced something is trying to chew on my foot, and resolve never to sleep again. So there is nothing better to motivate me to run than the thought of the lurching undead on my heels. (yes, I know it’s not real. No, it doesn’t make any difference.)

I will admit though that I switched it off when I encountered my first serious zombie mob (yes, I’m a massive wuss).

If you’re feeling really brave, enable zombie chase mode. The clue is in the name.

It’s available for both Android and iOS, and costs €5.99 (although it has been known to go on sale for a weekend here and there, so keep an eye out).
