    TECH TOOLS: BassJump subwoofer

    Ciara O'Brien

LAPTOP SPEAKERS are functional but they rarely set new trends for audio quality. They’ll do in an emergency, but true audiophiles will want something richer.

Twelve South’s BassJump subwoofer will help redress the balance a little. This is one for MacBook users, designed specifically for Apple’s laptop range. It satisfies all the usual laptop requirements: compact, easy to use and fits in well with the overall MacBook “look”.

The BassJump is designed to work with your existing laptop speakers, promising to turn your MacBook into a mini-sound system. Powered by USB, the device keeps cable clutter to a minimum by using a single cable to deliver both power and sound.

The custom software included will blend the sound from your built-in speakers with the output from the BassJump to boost your audio considerably. It even comes with its own neoprene case for carrying around.

It’s on the US Applestore for USD79.95. No sign of it on the Irish one. Where did you get yours Ciara?

    • kynos says:

Can’t find anywhere on Twelvesouth’s website to enter a credit card and shipping details.

    • Ciara says:

Click the buy now link on the BassJump product page – once you register it brings you to the checkout page. Shipping is quite expensive though, so it might be worth looking into the parcel forwarding services while Twelve South is offering free US shipping. Either that or rely on a US-bound person to pick them up for you in the Mac store.

The BassJump is quite new – it may yet appear on the Irish Apple store.

    • kynos says:

I’d have to get the US bound person to go thru’ all sorts of customs formalities on the way back tho’ reckon it might be below the de minimis limits for customs I’ll see if can’t get it via the parcel post cheers for that thanks

Outside the EU you can bring in a few hundred euro worth of goods – it’s all here http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/travel-to-ireland/customs_regulations_for_travellers

Bassjump would definitely come in under the limit.

    • kynos says:

Alright thought as much I’ll get it however and letcha know how it goes.

    • kynos says:

Kind of knew that already truth be told ex-customs myself. You can buy from the Apple Store in the US from Ireland if you’re using a US company VPN. Many times I’ve had to say vade retro never broke a customs law intentionally after joined customs anyway how late and stupid is this converseation?

    • Ciara says:

Do that – Twelve South make exclusively for mac and the kit is (usually) worth the cash.

    • kynos says:

Yikes 82 bucks additional shipping ex-US2IRL it’ll be awhile more yet.

Is this Mac only? Any chance I could get it to run on my Linux Mint install?
