    Facebook creates etiquette minefield

It used to be getting dumped by a text was bad enough. The faceless, can’t even be bothered with a phone call kind of brush off that would take up more than 30 seconds of your time.

But now it’s gone a step further, thanks to Facebook. People are using social networking sites to announce their breakups to the world, sometimes even before the other half of the couple has got the message.

Chris Brown is the allegedly latest celebrity to do it, but you can guarantee he won’t be the last. [New York Post]

From celebrities to ordinary people, it seems everyone is at it.

Spare a thought for Emma Brady, who found out her marriage was over when her husband changed his Facebook relationship status and a friend spotted it [TechDigest] Still, the fact that she’d already moved out was probably an indicator that all was not well.

More high profile Facebook splits include Sunderland’s Michael Chopra and his wife Heather Swan [The Mirror], while Prince Harry’s ex, Chelsy Davy, let everyone of their split through the social networking site [The Telegraph].

It’s an etiquette minefield, one probably best solved by sticking with the more neutral “It’s complicated” or better yet, not adding your relationship status to start with.
