Squad mourns loss of wounded Lions … and ROG

    Tommy

The squad was dealt a terrible blow yesterday as we found out that Leigh Halfpenny and Stephen Ferris were heading home.  Leigh could not hold in his emotions at training when he realised his leg was not getting better. For him to join the squad late thinking his leg was better again and then to find out it’s not must be so difficult for him.

Typical Stephen on the other hand has sat in the team room and put a brave face on, trying his best to be positive, but I can only imagine what must be going on in his head.  He has been outstanding on this trip so far and in my opinion was a shoo-in for a Test place.

I’m very friendly with Stephen and am absolutely devastated for him, he has become one of the most popular men in the squad and every single player here feels terrible seeing him walk around on crutches.

I’m looking down at him from my balcony as he sits on the beach, on his own and on the phone to someone at home. It’s a very hard time for him but he still manages to force a smile.

There have been a lot of injuries to players since the Lions squad was first announced but these two (Halfpenny and Ferris) have really hit home with me. We are so close to living the dream by playing for the Lions against the Springboks – a dream very few get to live out, but in sport that dream can be taken away so quickly.

On a brighter note, there is a bit of a clique forming as Ronan O’Gara-Jones (a rare funny joke from Rob Kearney) has decided to ditch the Irish guys and become best buddies with the Welsh boys. There are rumours within the squad that ROGJ may be looking at a Welsh club next year.

The guys not in the 22 for today’s (Wednesday) match went out for dinner last night to another brilliant steakhouse called the Butcher Boys.

Lions fever is really kicking in now as we were greeted at the restaurant with every table serenading us with their best version of Ireland’s Call, Fields of Athenry, Flower of Scotland and Swing Low Sweet Chariot.  The boys tried embarrassing me by trying to get Black Velvet Band going but thankfully it didn’t catch on.

A quick stop-off in the casino followed where Keith Curls, Ugo Monye and Darce cleaned up as the rest of us left with our tails between our legs.

Well he should know that everybody back here in Ireland is devastated for him and wishes him all the best.

You and ROGJ could do alittle swap- cos we really want you back on Irish soil, where you belong; doesn’t matter where!

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed that you stay injury free.

Great, insightful and funny blog Tommy. Just keep up what you’re doing and you will be a real star during the tests. I used to think that you were a bit if a donkey but the way in which you have played in the last two years has shown that you have the potential to become one the the world’s best wingers. I’m delighted to have been proven wrong. Good luck.

Cathal…did you hear those dastardly cynical plebs on Newstalk’s Off the Ball show taking the piss out of you tonight? I reckon you should get on to Tommy, explain what happened and get him to rouse a Lions posse (Paul O’Connell, Heaslip, Donnacha etc) and pay them a little …ahem…visit. p.s. Ken Early had nothing to do with it but ask please ask them to give him a slap anyway as he’s an annoying **** ;o)

Maybe there was more to Rog swapping jersey’s with Stephen Jones after the grandslam, should we get used to Rog in the bright red jersey of Wales? I hope not, we need him at munster and Ireland, one more Heineken cup please ROG?

I’m so disappointed for Leigh Halfpenny and especially for Stephen Ferris, I was really looking forward to seeing him match up against the springboks backrow, I always thought he was gonna be the star of the tour. Though, that mantle might well go to another Ulster man the way your playing Tommy!

Thanks for the Blog Tommy, I love having this kind of insight into what sounds like an amazing experience.

Ah no surprises with ROGJ getting pally with the Welsh lads now is there?? He was fairly quick to slip on the Welsh jersey as soon as the whistle had gone in Cardiff a while back!!
Best of luck with the rest of the tour Big Tom. I’m hoping for a back three of yourself, Lee Byrne and Luke. Really enjoying watching it here!!
Oh by the way, the missus would love a date with your good self. Only problem is she’s from Cavan. Ghastly business!!

    Hi Tommy and the lads,

Its great to see the Irish lads playing so well.
Its so sad and shameful that rte does not show any of the highlights of the best rugby ever played by the lions.
The welsh channel shows the highlights and interviews of the players afterwards and it is a disgrace that rte dont follow suit.

    Why is this?

Keep the Blogs going, but more importantly, get across the line as often as possible – I have a bet on you to be top scorer on the tour!!!

Michael Buckley…also, say what you want about Ken Early but it’s Oisin Langdon who does the weekend phone-in show who’s worse. Won a dvd player on his show during the 2007 world cup and still, even after inquiring a few times, still haven’t received it. Those Newstalk guys can’t be trusted! Good idea, might just try and get POC and the guys to pay them a visit!
