Gabriel Byrne says the bridge between Ireland and its diaspora is broken. What do you think?

On the front page of The Irish Times this morning, Ronan McGreevy has a story about how former cultural ambassador Gabriel Byrne has dismissed The Gathering initiative as a “scam”, saying it amounted to a “shakedown” of the Irish disapora.

The project director Jim Miley denied the claim this morning, saying they were “one man’s opinions” and the plan has been well received by the Irish diaspora so far.

What are your opinions of The Gathering? Is it a worthwhile initiative that recognises the value of the Irish diaspora to Ireland, or an exploitative “scam” as Gabriel Byrne has said? Will you be participating?
