Have your say: have you found work in your chosen profession abroad?
Have you found it easy or difficult to secure a professional position abroad? Were your Irish qualifications and experience recognised?
A Generation Emigration follower contacted us recently to request a forum discussion on professional opportunities abroad. He lived in Canada for three years, and despite having graduated with a good degree in IT, he ” found it virtually impossible to get any work in IT other than in tech support positions in call centres”. The majority of immigrants he encountered (Irish or otherwise) were working in casual jobs unrelated to their fields of study or expertise.
Have you found this to be the case in Canada or elsewhere? Did you find it easy or difficult to secure a professional position? Were your Irish qualifications recognised, or did you need accreditation from that country in order to take up a professional role there? Was your lack of experience or contacts in that country a factor? If you have successfully found a job in your field, what suggestions do you have for others? Or were you happy to take up a job in an area unrelated to your professional experience?
