What rates do you pay where you live? Is there a property tax, water rates or a bin collection charge, and if so, what do you get for your money? Would you pay the €100 household charge if you were still living in Ireland?

As the March 31st deadline for payment of the €100 household charge approaches, the controversy over it is intensifying. Just 20% of eligible homeowners have paid the levy so far.

One Generation Emigration reader contacted us to question what all the fuss is about – in Australia where she lives, paying rates for council services is “just part of normal life”.

What rates do you pay where you live? Is there a property tax, water rates or a bin collection charge, and if so, what do you get for your money? Would you pay the levy if you were still living in Ireland?
