Guantánamo Bay
http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/gallery/files/2012/01/pa2.jpgThe US navy base on the island of Cuba is commonly referred to as Guantánamo but is also known as Gitmo or GTMO. The site has contained Camp X-Ray - a military prison - since 2002 for so-called unlawful combatants captured by the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. The prison and the mistreatment there of prisoners along with the denial of protection under the Geneva Conventions has been the subject of much international criticism. This US military handout shows a detainee being escorted into the prison. Photograph: PA
