  • So what was hot this week? And what was not? A guest post by Aoife Valentine

    April 13, 2012 @ 10:00 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

    Hot

    Raf Simons for Dior

The rumourmill has been running for a long time on this one, but Raf Simons, now former creative director of Jil Sander, has been appointed artistic director of Dior. Known for his minimalist designs, the company’s chief executive has enlisted Simons to modernise the label and his first collection will be the A/W couture collection this year. Several designers have turned down the post already, fearing that taking the reigns after Galliano’s dramatic departure would be taking a poisoned chalice, but Simons is feeling “fantastic”.

    Justin Bieber’s shoot for Complex

We may be used to seeing Justin Bieber through the squeaky clean rose-tinted glasses his PR people would like us to, but the popstar who has just turned 18 has gotten bloodied up in a shoot for Complex and is “through being your punching bag,” according to a promo video for the shoot. Though pretty graphic, Bieber is somehow less annoying when he’s being beaten up and not pretending to be holier than thou.

    Gradient Nails

Of late, a simple French manicure simply won’t do. Even experimenting with bolder shades doesn’t quite cut it. If you don’t have extravagant artwork done on your nails, you may as well not bother doing anything with them. Simpler than transferring the works of Picasso onto your nails, however, is the gradient trend. Using any combination of colours you want and a cosmetic sponge, it’s simple, if a little messy to achieve, but looks a lot more effort than it is.

    Not

Geri Halliwell re-inventing that Union Jack Dress

This has been in the works for a while now, but it’s now more than just an idea the internet laughs at. Rather than just accept her fate as a former Spice Girl who wore a terrible outfit at least one time, Ginger Spice has reinvented her infamous British flag dress, though granted it is now actually a dress. Featured as part of her most recent collection for Next, it is not the only piece in the line to embrace ‘cool Britannica’ wholeheartedly. The fact that it costs £199 is almost as bad as the fact it exists.

    Bralets

Occasionally they look like a bra that has been extended to offer a little support to your back after some kind of minor accident but at the moment the high street is dominated by much prettier, cuter versions than anything you get for a broken bone. That’s all well and good when they’re worn well with something nice and high-wasted, but too much of that same high street is being trodden down by those who think baring your stomach like you’re Britney Spears (pre-babies and breakdowns) is perfectly okay.  Just look briefly in the mirror and you’ll realise it’s really not.

    Tommy Bowe’s shoe collection

Who knew the Irish international rugby star had his finger in so many pies? Just releasing his third collection of footwear, with each style named after a player, for upmarket brand Lloyd & Price, it’s very easy to question how one became three. If ever there were a reason  fashion and sports should remain quite a large distance from one another, these shoes are evidence of this. Stick to the rugby, Tommy.

  • Why do fashion bloggers dress so badly?

    April 5, 2012 @ 3:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

This is a question asked by a commenter on an article on Showbiz.ie featuring me in the ensemble above, with Xposé‘s Kirsteen O’Sullivan, while we mooched around Grafton Street and watched the moddles have their photographs taken for Oasis‘s high summer 2012 press call. I called a friend to tell her about the offending comment and, when she defended me (as friends are wont to do), I said, “no, it’s okay – I was wearing my mismatched pyjama outfit with blue shoes”. Her silence spoke volumes.

Here’s the same outfit, in dim lighting, with different shoes and no jacket. Miles better, I think you’ll agree. In my opinion, fashion bloggers don’t dress badly – some, in fact, dress very well, while others dress very interestingly, and show no concern for what the general consensus will be. I, personally, like to play a bit of a fashion game – some days, like today, I am casual (in Levi’s, a men’s Arran sweater and a pair of Converse, with my mother’s old printed scarf); other days, like that day on Grafton Street, I nod to trends in full-on fashion, and alienate all who dare to look upon me. But I don’t care – fashion should be fun, and if some days I look better than others, well, it’s all good! Life would be so boring if I looked amazing all the time … wouldn’t it?!

Anyway, enough rambling! As congratulations for reaching the end of the post without falling asleep or dying of boredom, I’m giving you the chance to win a €75 gift card for Oasis. All you need to do is like Oasis on Facebook, like Fash Mob on Facebook (as if you don’t already!) and either tweet about or share this competition on Facebook. Don’t worry about wording or hashtags; you can even tag it with #desperateforfollowers if you want, I care not! Oh, lastly, leave a comment below reassuring me that I don’t look all that bad. Or, you know, tell me I look awful – honestly is king*!

    * Nobody cares for honesty; just be nice.

One entry per person. The competition closes at midnight on Friday, April 6th, 2012. A winner will be chosen by me and no correspondence will be entered into.

  • Dreams of denim

    March 20, 2012 @ 2:00 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

In love with this Car Mar lookbook, featuring Alexandra Spencer of 4th and Bleeker (who I have yet to see look bad once – once!). Who would have thought that dip-dyed denim would make such a striking comeback? Then again, I guess there’s just nothing new to be done

I hope you all had a nice Bank Holiday weekend, by the way – I was busy live blogging the St Patrick’s Day festivities, then I sank into a stupor of reading approximately five Sookie Stackhouse novels, back to back.

  • River Island’s spring 2012 trends

    January 16, 2012 @ 8:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Check it out, River Island has done a great video to talk you through their spring trends.

    YouTube Preview Image

I particularly like the phrase “Versace inspired”, instead of, y’know, “we copied Versace because there was such a hype about them for H&M“. Oh well, I style like the cut of River Island’s gib of late – since they ditched the glitter jeans they’ve just gone from strength to strength.

What this video teaches you about S/S 2012 is that we’re looking at a riot of colour, serious gold jewellery, and you can’t be afraid to stand out. It’s the 1980s all over again – but (hopefully) with more flattering cuts.

  • Topshop’s S/S 2012 campaign imagery – is nothing new any more?

    January 13, 2012 @ 4:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Did anyone else read Kurt Anderson’s brilliant piece in Vanity Fair, “You say you want a devolution?” I wish I’d written it, actually; in it, Anderson maintains that the past 20 years have seen the most marked stagnation in the aesthetics of fashion and homewares. In other words, this is the time when trends stood still.  Anyway, in case you’re looking for a real-life illustration, how about these shots from the Topshop S/S campaign? This isn’t necessarily a criticism – I quite like some of the looks – but, man, do they look derivative!

  • Style small print: focus on snakeprint

    October 13, 2011 @ 5:17 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Did you catch yesterday’s paper? I’ve started a regular Wednesday style segment – small, but with lots of potential! Yesterday’s trend focus was on snakeprint – my picks below:

    Dress, €165 from French Connection

    Blazer, €59.95 from Zara

Dress, €120 from Autograph at Marks & Spencer

    Snakeprint skinnies, €76 at Topshop

Ankle boots, €37.99 from New Look

  • The final nail in the sartorial coffin

    September 5, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention for the past, oh, 12 months, but nails have suddenly become big business. From feeling like painted nails was the exception, rather than the rule, talons have taken centre stage and are often a carefully considered part of an ensemble. For my part, I am entirely rubbish at painting my nails, relied for a while on Sally Hansen Salon Effects stick-ons (to my detriment), and am now determined to bring my nails up to scratch (har, har) by treating ‘em well and then slathering them in whatever colour Chanel says is “on trend”.

I’ve also started paying an inordinate amount of attention to nail “trends”, helped in no small part by my following The Alpha Nail on Twitter and Facebook, and getting really into the idea of having crazy out-there nails . . . in fact, tonight I may just paint a set of falsies and apply ‘em tomorrow hoping they’ll last a week of meetings and work before – wooooot – London Fashion Week next week!

Here’s just a selection of looks she worked on over the past week, in her regular haunt in 9 Crow St in Temple Bar. (If you’re looking for an amazing fur coat, that’s where you want to look, incidentally!)

Former Miss Ireland Emma Waldron‘s mixed-up mani!

Galaxies – my faves! They’re seriously amazing, I am definitely going to go for them next time.

    A pick ‘n’ mix selection!

Oh, and if you’re wondering about upcoming nail trends, wonder no longer – nail guru Sophy Robson (Aoife of The Alpha Nail’s idol) predicts it’s all about the matte, and I love the old-fashioned oval shape of these nails.

    Just gorgeous!

  • Get collared

@ 10:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Collars are huge news this season – if the Man Repeller says so, you know it must be so – and Asos has come up trumps in providing a series of options for those of you just dying to try out the trend without spending mega bucks. (If you are spending mega bucks, check out these babies by Eleven Objects for size – I’ll have one of each, thanks . . .)

Love this pearl collar from Asos (just click on the photo to be taken to the item!), and especially love how this model is the image of Zooey Deschanel, which makes me want to listen to this . . .

This Gemma Lister collar (again, click through for the item!) is a little pricier at £75 or so, but I quite adore it. It’s definitely on my hit list, and see how it transforms even a simple sweater?! These collars are amazing.

These collar tips are a great way to road test this look without going the whole hog, and I think they’d make my sheer Penneys shirt look just faaaabulous . . . speaking of which, here’s my take on collaring, without, you know, a collar. I took a really chunky necklace, pinned it up really short and buttoned my shirt all the way up to the neck. I usually think I’m a bit buxom for the full button-up but this was kind of sweet, I think.

Did you know, by the way, that you can follow Fash Mob on Twitter? You can also follow me (although, I warn you, there’s a lot of One Direction talk going on at the moment), and you can follow Fash Mob on Facebook an’ all. What’re you waiting for?!

  • Androgyny is sexy – didn’t you get the memo?

    August 3, 2011 @ 3:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

At some point between Kardashian and bodycon, fashion has taken a serious right turn down the route of slick tailoring and menswear-inspired separates, meaning a very cool series of trends. I blame Cos, mostly, for its determined adoption of straight lines and boxy shapes, but it’s everywhere now – in feminine favourite Marks & Spencer, in Zara (oh, Zara, how I love and hate you in equal measure), in Dunnes and Penneys, for crying out loud.

    Warehouse A/W 2011

It’s a move away from the Mad Men-inspired styles we’ve seen dominate the high-street scene for the past five years or so and towards a much more restrained femininity. When you dress like a man, you can no longer rely on your T&A to show the world that you got ‘em; instead, it’s in the way you walk, the way you hold your head, the way you wear your hair – and, oh yes, your lipstick, my new favourite accessory.

I’m all about the brogues – today I wore mine with skinny jeans, a camel coloured trench and a grey vintage marl T-shirt by Helmut Lang (I know, check me out!), but added a bright purple (yes, purple) lip and a sequined bolero by Antik Batik because I just can’t quite get on board with full-on menswear. How about you? Do you go the whole hog or do you keep it girly?

  • The Filthy Club – just 24 hours left . . .

    July 26, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So I kind of dropped the ball on this one; note to self – when you receive a lookbook, read the use-by date!

These awesome T-shirts are by the Filthy Club, or the Fuck’n'Filthy Club, run by Josh Gordon and popping up right now on Crow St in Temple Bar, but only until tomorrow . . . I’m sorry!

I love the tee on the right with Laragh on it – where is she gone?!

Lovely logo, looks almost like a tattoo.

I wish this guy wasn’t smoking; I hate that people still glamourise it in advertising and in lookbooks, and what a lot of people don’t know is that we couldn’t use this in the paper, and I probably shouldn’t be putting it here – we’re ethics bound not to use imagery that promotes smoking. Point of note!
