  • Bikinis on the beach – a Miami shoot by Daniel Holfield, styled by Courtney Smith

    May 7, 2012 @ 3:28 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

If you got yesterday’s LIFE magazine with your Sunday Independent you’ll already have seen the fabulous shoot styled by Courtney Smith and photographed by Daniel Holfield, with hair and make-up by Melissa Conner and modelled by the gorgeous Gabrielle at Elite Model Management Miami. I love the acid brights – and it’s hard not to like a shoot with a hot lifeguard in it, as well as two slightly disgruntled looking sunbathers.

All of the items in the shoot are from Arnotts and available now!

  • Looking for a swimsuit?

You could do worse than head to Etsy, my online Mecca for all things vintage, original or handmade, where recently I came across these babies.

From Ariel Simone. Tyra would love those awkward angles!

Jaunty vintage fun! That’s what this screams to me. Beach-side fun with ice-creams and fun and frolics. Hurrah! From Fables by Barrie.

  • More swimwear – from Arnotts this time

    May 12, 2011 @ 2:05 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So here’s a selection of swimwear available from Arnotts. If you click through the photographs you’ll get, in the file name, the prices and brand names. Hurrah for technology / clever naming.

As someone with a somewhat ample – ahem – bosom, these kinds of tops are probably a good idea, although I do just tend to stick with swimsuits. More classy, I say, although what I really mean is “more casual, and I don’t need to worry about engaging my core”.

I have a swimsuit just like this! But in purple. I’ll tell you now, it’s not great for swimming, but if you don’t care who gets a good look at your goodies, then go on ahead.

I love polka dots, although I do fear looking like an overgrown child. Now: the bottom polka dot swimsuit is lovely, and I like, in theory, the skirt idea, but does it not scream “I am a bit fat – no, look, I really am, check out my swimsuit skirt”?

    Cute! Vintage in appearance!

I know this looks very . . . I don’t know. Old? As in, old-school? It’s not vintage in the way we think of vintage, but it’s very retro. In a I’m-going-camping-to-Wexford-with-my-folks way. An old-fashioned innocence? I like it.

I don’t love this swimsuit at all, and I suspect it only looks great because it’s against a sunny, holiday background – but oh, what a background! Now tell me: are you holidaying? Is this acceptable, in the recession? If so, where are you holidaying? If not, are you having a full or half head?

  • Because God knows it’s bikini weather

    February 16, 2011 @ 5:24 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Ain’t global warming just grand? February, and here I am, thinking about swimwear. It’s thanks, in all fairness, to an email I received this week alerting me to Cath Kidston‘s swimwear range (online and in Dundrum Town Centre) – which, while not exactly timely, did cheer me slightly and offer me a chance to think about sun, rather than about rain and stolen bicycles (gah) and kitty-threateners (gah again!).

This slightly abstract blue print reminds me of Mad Men (did anyone else love, love, LOVE the episodes where Don went to Miami?!) and of the 1960s and a little of The Great Gatsby or of Never Let Me Go (if they’d ever gone to the beach instead of walking around under grey skies, sulking).

LOVE IT. Also loving the slightly retro feel of the fuller brief, and the delightful shape of the bikini top. The bikini is €39 and the swimsuit will set you back €46.

In all honesty (as an aside), I couldn’t justify another swimsuit purchase, as I currently own four – and two bikinis – and holiday roughly once a year, and end up wearing the same swimsuit the whole time. Okay, I’m lying, I wear the same bikini bottoms the whole time, and that’s pretty much it, and I won’t be judged because I always wear sunscreen and I just don’t like tan lines! How about you? Do you go bikini or swimsuit, and do you like to buy a new one every year?
