Finally! I love having curly hair!
But really, I’m sure it’ll be short-lived. Via Fashion Gone Rogue.

Last year, I went to Lyon with my Mum and aunt for a weekend. It seems like approximately 10 years ago now, but as I only just got around to taking the photographs off my card, here’s a photo diary / visual vomit for your Monday morning. Enjoy!
Lace making at the market in Lyon – check out this glam granny’s nails! So amazing.
I think there are very few people on this earth – maybe Salman Rushdie and Robert Fisk, but that’s only because they probably don’t care – who would deny the similarities, vocally, lyrically and musically, between Jessie J on Domino and Katy Perry‘s Firework. But, y’know what? I’m in good company because, like Salman and Bob, I don’t care either.
Such a catchy tune. Plus, “I’m feeling sexy and free, like glitter’s raining on me”, really?! How does glitter = sexy and free? That said, I’m totally trying that next time I have a wind tunnel and loads of glitter.
Check out the costumes, though – this is a fashion blog, after all. Henry Holland makes a big appearance, as does Versace for H&M – I love that Jessie J’s not afraid to take fashion chances and she seems entirely indifferent to the concept of being traditionally sexy. Top marks from me.
What say ye? Do you love or hate her?
Are you planning any holidays this year? Is anyone?! I feel as if, for the past couple of years, the summer holidays of yore have been replaced with long weekends in Cork and overnights in Galway – and while those are beautiful in and of themselves, I yearn for those hazy three-week holidays with my parents, when we’d lounge on the beach during the day and skive off with the Linkin Park-loving German tourists at night. Ah, memories.

This year, I am determined, come hell or high water, to get some sun. Whether it’s in Marbella (to rhyme with umbrella) or Wexford, I’m praying for a heatwave, a week off, and a lot of good books. Oh, and, my wardrobe? (This is a fashion blog, after all.) I’ll be kitting myself out in Sass & Bide, head to toe. I’m currently lusting after this dress, which would just be perfect for a friend’s French May wedding.
New Year’s day was possibly one of the most surprisingly warm days of the past couple of months – whereas, last year, we were all bundled up in the snow, this year I slept with the window open and went out a-wandering, in search of brunch, with no sleeves. No sleeves, for crying out loud! I’d been dying to wear my new Black Milk leggings and finally found an outfit that I think works with them – monochrome, basically, with a chunky Topshop necklace and kind of 1970s-esque boots from Buffalo. My woollen vest is from H&M, over a cardigan from, I think, Avoca, and a shirt from Warehouse. My handbag is a gorgeous buttery leather number by a US company, Vince Camuto (which, disclaimer, can now boast my sister as design director).
Oh, and see that bag in my right hand? That’s only the sale bargain to end all sale bargains, to be revealed soon … happy Tuesday!
This year I was really lucky in that I got the opportunity to do a lot of travel – to London, with John Lewis and for London Fashion Week – to Las Vegas, to Turkey, to New York, to Portland … and more. Hover over the photographs for descriptions, and please, don’t ask about my carbon emissions …
So I joined Instagram this year, in case you didn’t already know. It’s one of my favourite social networks, and coming from someone who’s tweeted, oh, 42,000 times, that’s saying a lot. If you remain unconvinced, Techcrunch had a great blog post on why Instagram is so popular.
In any case, rather than doing a serious look back at the year that’s gone – and, I’ll be honest, I’m quite glad to see the back of it, and I don’t think I’m alone on that one – I decided to give you a look into my 2011 through pictures. I’ve divided it into three categories: work, play and travel, and play comes first! If you don’t like the idea of a long, meandering, picture-heavy post, look away now …
At the start of the year I moved into a new house with a new housemate, having lived alone for the latter half of 2010. These things sometimes don’t work out, but in this case it did – and he gives great photo.
(He didn’t much like the cats, so it was convenient that Dexter went missing, while Calvin went to a better life in the country. And then, eh, got run over.)
My sister had a baby, who has, since this photograph was taken, quadrupled in size. No joke.
I ate a lot of chicken.
My housemate got a new mug … (this narrative is somewhat less thrilling than I thought it would be)
This happened.
And then, this happened.
I drank a lot of coffee, and sometimes I photographed it.
I got my hair cut and turned into Miss Jean Brodie.
My friend Eoin got old …
And we all celebrated another Christmas.
On a personal note, 2011 was a year of highs and lows – but mostly highs and, in the end, an even keel. I gave up smoking (and I’m still off them) and, more importantly, I discovered I was suffering from a mild form of depression, manifesting in anxiety and a general ill-feeling. Perhaps above all, I discovered that talking about said depression, the drugs I’m on, the way I dealt with it, has helped more people than I care to list – and that, at the end of the year, I can honestly say that, for the first time in a while, I feel like I am on solid ground. And that’s saying something.
So thank you – all – for reading, tweeting, Facebooking, calling, texting, being there for me when I wanted to vent, or I wanted to photograph, or I wanted to sing or dance, or just sit on the couch and watch re-runs of Sex and the City. You know who you are.
I’m so sorry I didn’t buy them when I had the chance, although my Miu Mius are slightly making up for it (do I sound like a brat?) – in any case, I’m comforted by the fact that I’m not the only blogger in the world with an Isabel Marant Bekket obsession. Canned Fashion has gone so far as to sketch the offending sneakers … I would buy this and hang it on my wall.
You can see more amazing fashion-inspired sketches over on Natalie’s Flickr.
For 2012, I’m going to do a few more “what I wore” type posts (obviously only when I think I wore something cool, so it’ll be quite rare). I’ve realised that it’s one of the things I love most about the other blogs I read – in particular, Man Repeller, the Sartorialist, Fashiontoast, The Blonde Salad . . . ad ininitum. If it’s something you hate and think screams of narcissism, let me know! (If, however, you think I’m horrendous looking, please, keep that to yourself – it’s about the duds, not the face, kids.)
If you want details, trot over to Lookbook, where you’ll now find me, showing off my goods alongside the best of the rest. The only thing I don’t have details on is my nail work; it’s Opi, with a layer of Chanel’s matte topcoat, and how do you like that accent nail?! LOVE IT!
What did you wear on Christmas day? Are you on Lookbook? Do share!
Admit it, this is the most perfect thing you have seen (sartorially speaking) in a while.
I’ve been hailing the virtues of double cuffs for a while now, but rarely do you see a photograph that so well embodies something you’re trying to make happen (and, let’s face it, mostly failing – the Wonder Woman comparisons are too much for my friends, but now that I see this, maybe my problem is that I’m going for gold rather than opting for softer, cooler silver?).
This also makes me yearn for this amazing bag at Zara* that I’ve kind of been toying with the idea of purchasing – because really, I have bags coming out my ears at this stage and am finding it hard to cope with the ones I do have, crammed into a drawer in my tiny front bedroom.
In any case, images like this make me seriously rethink my own aesthetic – and I think it’s fair to assume (though I have lost the link) that it is from a fashion blog – which goes to show just how much influence blogs have on my ideas about fashion, rather than catwalks. The internet truly is changing everything, and not just pornography. (It’s also made so many things so much more accessible – and talk about the choice! Buying Christmas presents has become a logistical nightmare!)
* If you found yourself staying over at a house party, it could double as a pillow! See, beautiful and practical!
