  • Where are our Olympic athletes?

    May 15, 2012 @ 1:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

How many Irish Olympic athletes can you name (apart from Katie Taylor, above)? Now try with the UK or US teams – I bet you can name more of their athletes than you can of ours, and I don’t think this is your fault. There has been so much in the international media focused on Team GB and Team USA for the 2012 London Olympic Games, and very little – comparatively speaking – in our own national printed media. I was chatting with an Irish PR the other day who was saying that her UK-based company wanted to adorn its Irish windows with its Olympic dressings, and she was trying to explain to them that Irish people wouldn’t get it, that there’s not that much of a buzz surrounding the Olympics here as there is in the UK.

When we spoke about it, I couldn’t help but agree with her. The Olympics are a big deal – and I want to be all fired up about them – but without a real media buzz around them, I find myself all at sea. And, let’s face it, I’m too lazy to do my own research. Why have we all been so quiet on the Olympic front? Aside from anything else, wouldn’t the Games be a great excuse to drive home the message about healthy living that we’re supposed to believe is at the forefront of the HSE’s priority list?

If you don’t believe me, check out just a small selection of UK and US covers focused on their Olympic athletes:

  • Strike a ball, strike a pose – a fashion show in aid of Respect

    May 14, 2012 @ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

This Friday coming I will be testing my mettle by styling a fashion show in aid of Respect, a registered charity involved in fundraising for people with intellectual disabilities, in association with Absolute the Agency. The show is on in Dublin’s Mansion House, and opens with a performance by Youth Ballet West, a drinks reception with canapés, then on to the fashion show, MCed by Kathryn Thomas (above, wearing a T by Tahari dress from Arnotts), styled by me and with clothes from Arnotts, Divine, Project 51, Debenhams, millinery by Aisling Ahern and much, much more!

Tickets are €45 – which yes, is a little pricey for a Friday night, but includes canapés, drinks reception, the fun of the fair and entry to the afterparty in Krystle nightclub. Tickets available here! Please consider coming along, and bring your friends!

  • Oh Buoy – Brown Thomas’s summer promotion, complete with €250,000 beauty giveaway

    May 12, 2012 @ 4:07 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Have you heard about Brown Thomas‘s big summer giveaway event, Oh Buoy? Until May 20th, the department store is running a promotion that includes complimentary Murphy’s ice-cream, photobooths, live music and DJs and demonstrations from top international make-up artists. Plus – and here’s the sweet part – Brown Thomas is giving away €250,000 of gift card credits!

To enter, all customers have to do is to spend €60 on beauty in a single transaction, after which they bring their receipt to the competition desk on the ground floor, complete a skills test (basically, a quiz question or two!) and then pick a piece of paper from a tombola, on which will be written the value of your prize (if any!). Some lucky customers have already walked away with €1,000 to spend in-store!

I love free money, but even more than that, I love Daniella Moyles in the photocall for the event – so, in honour of her happy, smiley, bikini-clad self, more pics after the jump!  (more…)

  • Isabel Lucas in Proenza Schouler making knee-high boots and bare legs look good

    May 11, 2012 @ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So yeah, I bet nobody saw this coming. Her choice of knee-high boots for the Met Gala was definitely unexpected, but with her beachy hair and that gorgeous Proenza Schouler dress, I think Isabel Lucas really knocked it out of the park. Pic via Le Fashion

  • Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy – collective awwwww, anyone?

    May 10, 2012 @ 5:21 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

I mean, seriously. Who doesn’t love those faces?

  • Met Gala 2012 – welcome back, Beyoncé!

    May 9, 2012 @ 3:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Welcome back, B! We’ve missed you.

Also, way to work the train, B. This is what I call a pregnancy comeback.

  • Met Gala 2012 – the also-rans

@ 1:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Yes, it’s Met Gala day! I know, so exciting! And it’s La Wintour! I’m sure the nice folks at PETA are only raged, which means I love it. Although … I’m not sure I love it. It’s Prada, does that mean I should love it? Nyeh. (more…)

  • Met Gala 2012 – Anja Rubik

@ 10:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

I’m not the kind of gal who is afraid of bodies – I don’t have any judgment for women who choose to show, or hide, theirs. But when you’re supermodel Anja Rubik, is this really what you want the world to see?

Anja, honey, your left hip bone is not your most attractive body part. Just FYI.

  • The Met Costume Institute Gala – the goods

@ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

This year I’ve been coming a cropper (if I do say so myself) with posts on fashion events – remember the Golden Globes? And the Oscars? Well, I’m a day late with your Met Ball updates – but that’s because I spent yesterday in the company of the lovely Anna from Louis Vuitton, working on a really exciting upcoming project that I can’t wait to share with you!

In any case, here are my serious hits from this year’s Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum, when all of fashion’s finest folk come out to play. Carey Mulligan looked gorgeous in Prada (above) – and so happy! Other hits?

Jessica Alba won’t be winning awards for originality, but her metallic Michael Kors gown is gorgeous.

Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe – innnnnteresting! Not to mention gorgeous, although I do have serious questions about that turban.

Now I know, I know, Donatella Versace is not always on my best-dressed list, but I think, when all’s said and done, Donatella looks great. Her waist looks tiny, her body looks great, her fringe is really holding its own and her face is … well. I think she looks fab. Top marks!

Dianna Agron is stunning in this Carolina Herrera dress, although, like young Jessica Alba before her, not the most original. Still gorgeous.

What do you think? Am I missing anyone? (If I am, I blame a lack of available photographs – Nina Dobrev also got my vote, and, unlike almost everyone else, I quite liked Leighton Meester in Marchesa!)
