  • Sugar High by Mario Ardi for Design Scene

    April 26, 2012 @ 2:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

I love this sweeter-than-candy shoot. There’s something so 1990s Just Seventeen magazine about it, from the perfect pink lips to the straight brows and the just perfect hair! I love that her hair doesn’t look real; it looks as if it’s been coated in candy floss. Amazing shoot for Design Scene.

  • STOP WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING because Beyoncé has a Tumblr!

    April 5, 2012 @ 5:11 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Beyoncé smiling! Beyoncé laughing! Beyoncé on holidays! Beyoncé and Jay-Z! OMG honestly I am officially obsessed. I will never get anything done again, ever. I think I am in love with her – oh, and I want her life. Amazing.

  • Olivia Palermo: an exclusive shoot

    March 31, 2012 @ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Did you catch today’s Irish Times magazine? Olivia Palermo was dressed in clothes from Kildare Village by stylist Paula Hughes and shot by Andreas Pettersson (with make-up by Billy Orr) in this photoshoot – and fashion editrice extraordinaire, Deirdre McQuillan, sat down with her for a Q&A.

Describe what you’re wearing (on arrival at this photoshoot, pics here)

My jacket is from Reiss in New York – it’s the perfect transition piece for spring. The shirt is Belstaff, the black skinny jeans are from Cos in Germany and the scarf is Christian Dior. I always have a great pair of ballet flats – these in maroon velvet are from French Sole – it’s a better colour than black, I think, particularly in photographs. This is what I’d wear travelling.

    And the jewellery?

I picked up this gold bracelet from an antique dealer in New York, and the watch, ring and earrings are vintage pieces from my mother. I like wearing my mother’s jewellery – she has an amazing sense of style.

What’s the key piece in your wardrobe?

A good blazer is very important and I always think there is something very sexy about a tailored jacket. I have a tailor in Hamburg who makes great jackets for me. I love colour and have jackets in different colours. I also have vintage Christian Dior and a Givenchy dinner jacket with velvet lapels to which I pin art deco clips.

How do you describe your style?

It is relatively classic and, although I am fashion-forward, I like to be covered up – a little uptight and buttoned up.

    What are your style influences?

I look at old movies from the ’40s for inspiration. I dress for myself and think it is important to look polished. Italian men are always impeccably dressed. It is not acceptable to walk out of the house in sweatpants.

Is there anything you wouldn’t wear?

I don’t like wearing tank tops without a cardigan unless I’m on a beach. I won’t wear Crocs, Birkenstocks (especially with socks), jumpsuits or chokers.

    What is your favourite look?

An oversize man’s cashmere sweater over little ballet pumps. Fashion is so accessible to everybody now and people are more interested -  I hope a more covered-up look catches on. More designers and buyers are coming back to a ladylike look.

    What are your favourite shops?

I try to shop on my travels, but also balance that with seeing museums and galleries. I might be in Tokyo checking out street fashion and just to have a little something is a reminder of where I have been. I love 10 Corso Como in Milan and the Corner store in Berlin because the buyer has an incredible eye. I spend a lot of time in Berlin and Hamburg – Berlin is cool, but Hamburg is beautiful.

    Are you a collector?

I collect vintage jewellery and that love came from my mother and aunt from an early age – they have an amazing archive of ’40s vintage pieces. You can find incredible pieces in antiques road shows in the US and in Miami.

    What magazines do you read?

I come from a magazine background, so I look at everything and anything because different markets have different looks all over the world and their magazines have very different layouts and approaches. I am a big supporter of British fashion and British Vogue is one of my favourite magazines. People are looking for fewer investment pieces now so you don’t need so much variety any more.

    Are you developing your blog?

My blog is a lifestyle blog with magazine features and can’t just be all fashion – I’d love to see it evolve into its own brand over the next five years.

(I love how it says “actor” as part of Olivia’s bio on this video. I don’t think she did any acting before this: “This bag, in a woven fabric, is perfect for spring.” Also, this is not a behind-the-scenes video – be warned! It is a promo video masquerading, so it is. Still, I love Olivia. I could listen to her inanities for hours on end!)

  • Dreams of denim

    March 20, 2012 @ 2:00 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

In love with this Car Mar lookbook, featuring Alexandra Spencer of 4th and Bleeker (who I have yet to see look bad once – once!). Who would have thought that dip-dyed denim would make such a striking comeback? Then again, I guess there’s just nothing new to be done

I hope you all had a nice Bank Holiday weekend, by the way – I was busy live blogging the St Patrick’s Day festivities, then I sank into a stupor of reading approximately five Sookie Stackhouse novels, back to back.

  • Shit Fashion Girls Say – part two

And just in case you haven’t seen the original … My favourite is the posing lesson: “Little teapot, chin down, eyes up.” It reminds me of Ellen, my BFF who’s just moved to Landan. (Should I be jeals?)

  • Elle Fanning is a sherbet dream in Rodarte

    January 10, 2012 @ 8:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Nothing makes you yearn for spring quite like pastels and Elle Fanning in these sugary, new season dresses by Rodarte couture is no exception. The shoot, by iconic photographer Bill Owens, is for a special edition of A Magazine curated by Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

But don’t get too excited about the collection just yet as it’s the first and last time it’ll be shot – it’s been acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as part of their permanent collection (nooooooooo!). Fashion pervs with unrealistic bank balances – 0. Culture – 5,000,0000. Le sigh.

  • Fashion regrets or, maybe, good decisions

    January 9, 2012 @ 8:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

A couple of weeks ago I ordered this floral shirt from Zara online, and waited, eagerly, for it to come into stores so I could put it on, tuck it into high-waisted denims and swan about town like the young fashionista I think I am.

But when I went in and finally saw it in the flesh, it was, well, not what I expected. Instead of the crisp cotton of my floral shirt dreams, it was a soft polyester, like a man-made silk – and it was almost shiny. Ugh. I did not like. And so I returned.

But now, I see that the blogging world has made this shirt their must-have of December / January – and I feel a tinge of regret. Then I think again; I think, “well, if they all have it, it must be very trendy, and not at all cool, like I thought it was”. See how I manage to turn things around? Still, I do like the cut of Karen‘s jib.

  • Shiny, happy people …

    January 5, 2012 @ 8:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Of late I’ve been yearning for those magazine editorials of the 1990s, where the girls were happy, sunkissed, rolling around on the beach or in the hay … just looking, basically, like they’re enjoying life. It was a time before heroin chic, before models lost that extra two stone, before Kate Moss and Karlie Kloss and Abbey Lee.

It’s a time that I Love Wildfox harnesses and throws out, day after day after day. Hot girls having fun! Can I get a hell yeah?!

  • What I wore – in transit

    December 30, 2011 @ 11:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

A couple of weeks ago I went to London on a press trip – remember when I told y’all about Debenhams? – and I wanted to be cosy, slightly cool (hence the ankle boots) and comfortable.

I also, obviously, wanted to have a really stupid expression on my face. My cardi is from what is fast becoming my go-to vintage store, Shutterbug in Kilkenny and my boots are from Buffalo. I own them in three colours and, whaddya know, I’m wearing a pair today! My watch is Michael Kors, since then I lost it (my heart breaks), and my rings are YSL (left) and Topshop. Jeans are River Island and glasses are Gok Wan for Specsavers! Bisous!

  • Sketching fashion – those Isabel Marant sneakers (again)

    December 29, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

I’m so sorry I didn’t buy them when I had the chance, although my Miu Mius are slightly making up for it (do I sound like a brat?) – in any case, I’m comforted by the fact that I’m not the only blogger in the world with an Isabel Marant Bekket obsession. Canned Fashion has gone so far as to sketch the offending sneakers … I would buy this and hang it on my wall.

You can see more amazing fashion-inspired sketches over on Natalie’s Flickr.
