  • An update from casa Karl

    May 16, 2012 @ 1:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So, in case you’ve been hiding from the world for the past week, I’m here to tell you that Kaiser Karl has, indeed, been most busy, between showing Chanel’s 2013 Cruise collection in Versailles to shooting the lookbook for Cruise starring Cara Delevingne and coming out with a sumptuous, maharajah-themed advertising campaign for pre-Fall 2012. First? The lookbook:

I’m really unsure how I feel about this – while I love the interlocking C motif facial appliqué (so very noughties Marilyn) and the metallic shoes, I’m kind of over the candyfloss hair and I dislike the whole dolly vibe. How about you?

On the other hand, I am all about the advertising campaign, which is just gorgeous.

  • Mulberry (finally) launches the Del Rey

    May 15, 2012 @ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Back in February, we caught our first glimpse of Mulberry’s Del Rey bag, on none other than Mme Del Rey herself, sitting a mere two seats in front of me at the Mulberry A/W 2012 catwalk show. Well now the vintage-inspired bag has arrived, and is available now on Mulberry.com for a mere £795. I’m being a tad sarcastic with the “mere” there, but £795 is not the highest price Mulberry could have put on the bag, so I am ever-so-slightly pleasantly surprised.

And you know what? Despite my initial reservations about the bag – I thought it slightly “meh”, as all of the best wordsmiths say, upon first glance – it has really grown on me and I feel as if the Del Rey bag could be my “gateway” bag. You know, the bag that finally ushers in my adulthood and takes me away from childish dressing and Converse on weekends.

What do you think? Is the Del Rey a yay or a nay for you? And, while we’re at it . . .

  • Louis Vuitton S/S 2012 accessories collection

    February 23, 2012 @ 7:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Yesterday morning I headed along to the beautiful confines of the Merrion Hotel (I admit that, until that moment, I had only ever been in the Cellar bar, which is a lovely, intimate space – perfect for getting quite drunk in) to preview Louis Vuitton‘s S/S accessories collections, available in their boutique in Brown Thomas. Once their, their charming PRs talked about how Vuitton, as a heritage brand, rarely reinvents the wheel; instead, it reinterprets classic shapes and designs or launches old favourites in new, seasonal-appropriate colours.

This is the Sofia Coppola bag, inspired by its namesake and in a beautiful crocodile skin for spring (front) and a pillarbox red as part of Louis Vuitton’s Cruise collection.

And check out the men’s selection – in what I’m telling you is going to be the next black: charcoal grey. Just gorgeous – I also love that the strap on the large briefcase in the back is detachable. If I found myself anywhere near one of those I’d be commandeering that gorgeous canvas strap for use on all kinds of things!

Click through for more pics from the S/S launch and tell me: are you a Louis Vuitton fan?

  • On my video radar this week . . .

    December 13, 2011 @ 10:30 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Keeping up with the latest in video is a full-time job – so I rely on my favourite fashion blogs to keep me informed. This week, Disneyrollergirl put up a video of how Mulberry makes handbags. Behold!

  • Dreaming of denim

    September 7, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So just in case my post on nails earlier this week wasn’t enough for you, and in case you haven’t been sufficiently encouraged to hit up Brown Thomas for tomorrow night’s Fashion Night Out in association with Vogue, here’s another reason: tomorrow night sees the launch of Chanel‘s Les Jeans de Chanel, especially designed for the night in question.

The shades go from a medium to a very light blue, and I can’t help but think they’d be perfect for creating ombréed nails . . . plus, Chanel nail varnishes are just plain lovely. And when you buy the limited editions, in the Chanel boutique, you get a Chanel carrier bag, which always makes me feel special, and just that little bit pretentious. Just how I like it!

How about you? Do you dig Chanel’s limited editions or are they too gimmicky for you? Are you fundamentally against getting on a waiting list for a nail polish? How do you feel about the situation in Libya at the moment?

Okay, that last question was a joke, but even typing it out did make me feel a little guilty. Then I remember an editorial I read by Lorraine Candy, who, when she was accused of promoting an industry that was “just frocks”, asked if we would say that about the motor industry, that it’s “just cars”. Because fashion, like it or not, is the second biggest industry in the UK. (In Ireland it comes in around fourth, after farming and making Tayto.)

Polishes are priced at €25 each from the Chanel boutique at Brown Thomas.

  • Socks, snakeskin and, oh yeah, adult women who look like dolls

  • Elsa Peretti designs for Tiffany & Co

    April 5, 2011 @ 12:17 pm | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Elsa Peretti, the former Italian model and now jewellery designer, has turned her hand to a series of bottle designs for Tiffany, launched now in Tiffany & Co in Brown Thomas and online.

The Italian designer is renowned for her work in silver and gold for Tiffany, jewellery she has been designing for the high-end jeweller since 1974. Her trademark is the fluidity of her designs – apples, teardrops and now a revival of her first design, the bottle, with seamless shapes and no hard edges.

These sweet designs remind me of handmade jugs bought on the streets in Turkey; of the scenes in Disney’s Aladdin where our hero is running through the streets; of the old modernity of Tunisia; of lazy Italian towns and lazier Italian lunches.

And you know I love nothing more than to layer necklaces. I’d love to get a whole cluster of these and wear them together with something really simple: a pair of J Brand bootcut jeans (seen recently on Anna Wintour, proving that, if we were in any doubt, the bootcut is back) and a simple tee by Vince. Perfection.

Prices for the new jewellery collection start at €290.

  • The grand ballet – fashion, art, film . . .

    January 24, 2011 @ 10:00 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

So how many of you went to see Black Swan this weekend? (I can’t help but think it a pity for the Mulleavy sisters that the film itself is receiving so many accolades – the chances of their costumes being centre stage grow slimmer with each five-star review.)

Well the influence of Aronofsky’s dance-themed psychological thriller is being seen far and wide on the fashion scene, and this shoot in Vogue Russia is but one of the balletic editorials out there at the moment. Tutus and tulle are going to be big news for S/S 2011 – but what say you? Is it a do or a don’t?

  • Golden Globes – the good, the bad and Megan Fox

    January 17, 2011 @ 11:55 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

The biggest surprise of 2011′s Golden Globes red carpet has to have been the fact that Angelina didn’t wear black – although she did stick with her tried ‘n’ trusted formula of column dress + back cleavage. Still, this emerald green Versace was, in my books, very much a hit for Jolie. Stunning.

Another hit – and more colour blocking – from Kyra Sedgwick with this beautiful sunset yellow dress by Emilio Pucci. Love the offsetting with the turquoise earrings, and have mucho respect for Sedgwick as I know full well (as do most of the Irish population) that yellow, in any of its tones, is not an easy number. • The Balmain budget special

    December 7, 2010 @ 11:29 am | by Rosemary Mac Cabe

Well today is all about the timely emails, namely, from the Outnet to inform me that none other than Balmain is now available on the Outnet, all at 70% off! A BARGAIN, you say?!!

Well look! A beautiful sequined top, by Balmain, at a 70% discount! Meaning that this top, on the Outnet, will cost you the bargain price of £1,615.50. Yes, you read that right – reduced from a whopping £5,385.

Now another sequined top, also at 70% discount. So this baby – I love the long sleeves, not to mention the nice, warm bronze colour of the sequins – will set you back just £1,837.50. To put that in context, it would originally have cost you £6,125.

What? You want more? Well here you go, we can provide. For those of you who are strapped for cash, this blazer is a veritable bargain, at £1,026. (It was once £3,420.)

And another sequined delight, at £3,560. Reduced from £14,240. NO, THESE ARE NOT TYPOS. Would you be well?! That’s all I want to know. Would. You. Be. Well.

    The end.
