Seeing as my situation now means I’ll no longer be doing the what I bought posts (yes, fine, these are financially DIRE straits), I’ll have to settle for doing the what I would buy . . . such as last week’s Marc by Marc lust-have! Today’s edition? Topshop only, and just two items, but man, are they gorgeous items.
I was originally looking for a gorgeous dalmatian-print jacket I saw in the Guardian (I love the Guardian! It’s hilarious and very informative, although I do only read the features parts), but this snake-effect suede bomber is so up my alley it’s unreal. That said, who needs three leather jackets? No one, that’s who.
On the other hand, everyone needs a leather tote with dalmatian trim! Don’t try to argue it like it ain’t true. It is true! I need it. Especially now I have a basket for my bicycle and don’t have to have a bag with a long shoulder strap! Then again, I tried to use the old “but I paid off my credit card” excuse to justify stealing the £120 for this bag from my future self . . . and thievery is never good.
I am writing this post on Friday; ask me if I bought either of them and we’ll see how strong I remained over le weekend!
The coat story from yesterday’s newspaper, on the blog! Imagine that – double dipping! Or something.
Reiss’s boxy red - There is a reason Reiss is the go-to for hardworking workwear, and this wool and cashmere blend jacket is one of them. The colour is perfect for standing out, while the cut will work with anything – dresses, jeans, ankle-grazing cigarette pants. It’s got just enough of the so-hot-right-now Scandinavian vibe to make it trendy while being classic enough to last. Layers will really be your friend with this; team with a chunky knit and an even chunkier scarf for volume and texture. €340
J by Jasper Conran’s ladylike wool – This is the coat Lady Mary would wear, were she ever to venture outside Downton Abbey in the dead of winter. One part British aristocracy, one part Murder She Wrote (more than a little Mad Men), this coat is the classiest number you’ll find this side of a whole month’s paycheque. Team yours with a block heel, a pair of opaque tights and a vintage-style satchel. €225 at Debenhams
Zara’s S&M meets military - Forget all about the weather and invest in this relatively lightweight jacket. It won’t keep you warm – I’m sorry, did the fashion gods ever maintain they were practical? – but it will make you look so, so cool, and if you were ever to meet Scott Schuman he would definitely take your picture. €99.95
Did you catch today’s Irish Times column? I’ll fill you all in as the week goes by if you didn’t, but if you have a chance to pick up the paper I’d really recommend it (obviously)!
In any case, I recommended three gorgeous coats that will suit all shapes and sizes . . . but for me? This is the coat on my shopping list, shapelessness be damned.
It’s €89.99 from TK Maxx.
So on Thursday, while the city was partying (we all partied, remember?), French Connection was releasing its exclusive Fashion Night Out coat, this navy number, at the price of €138 . . .
I love this coat. The big collar makes it that little bit different while the blue colour is really versatile, and not black, crucially. I’m a big fan – if I wasn’t holding out for an amazing pink blazer I saw in Reiss (look #58), I would run out and buy this right now.
In other news, today I’m wearing my beloved Jeffrey Campbell jaguar print boots, which a colleague has just said make me look “like how a kitten would look if you put shoes on it”. AMAZING.
