I go through definite phases with my make-up – nine days out of 10 I’ll stick to a bare minimum of foundation (No 7′s Perfectly Matte or YSL’s Touche Éclat foundation are my current poisons), bronzer (Bobbi Brown), eyebrow powder (Benefit’s Brow Zings) and mascara (NYC’s whatever I have to hand). Other days, I feel like rocking a bold lip, and for the past few days my bold lip of choice has been YSL‘s Rouge Volupté in 10, a gorgeous hot pink-fuchsia hybrid that is almost blindingly bright, ultra moisturising and smells delicious. In short, it is the perfect lipstick.
My Rouge Volupté was a birthday gift from the one and only Fluffster, and one of my favourites since I got my Barbie house at the age of six. Fluffster is always telling me that I need a bold lip to offset my large geek specs, and I think that she was right on the money with this gorgeous, bright lippie.
The main problem – and something that might be obvious from these photographs – is that Rouge Volupté is not only super moisturising, but it is super soft, so accidents, as they say, happen. In my case, this accident was my lipstick being squashed up against its lid, and getting most devastatingly battered. Still, it survived, which is more than I’ve heard about other people’s Rouge Volupté babies.
I apply mine once, blot, apply again, blot and apply again, smudging the edges with my fingers slightly so it’s not too perfect. And I reapply after every drink and every morsel eaten; the downside of moisturising lipsticks is that they are not, as a rule, super long lasting. But I’ll take it over my lips drying and flaking any day! (Oh and in case you’re wondering about the Hackett lookbook – I’m currently at London Collections: Men and yesterday saw Erin O’Connor closing the Hackett A/W 2013 show from the front row - quite the experience! More anon.)
