Unexpected crush: Rihanna

“Why do girls always say ‘girl crush’? It’s not as if I’m going to think you’re a lesbian if you just say ‘crush’” - Mindy Kaling in the best new series of last year, The Mindy Project.
Now that we’ve got that wee quote out of the way, on to the most surprising news to hit irishtimes.com since that clever pussy cat tried to bust those prisoners out: I think I’ve fallen in love with Rihanna. I think it was this photograph (above) that did it, of Rihanna at an event for fans to celebrate the launch of her latest album, Unapologetic. Girlfriend is wearing leather surf shorts, with an oversized leather tee, a black headscarf, and a red lip. And girlfriend is working it.
The truth is: I wouldn’t make a lot of the decisions Rihanna has made. I don’t like her boyfriend, for one, and I don’t like the way she treated journalists on her 777 tour (because I am a journalist, I take umbrage on their behalf). But I enjoy her music. I love her accent. I like her brave fashion choices, and the fact that she is – cliché alert – entirely unapologetic about all of those things, her decisions included. It can’t be easy to wake up one day and be a role model without having been consulted about whether or not this was what you wanted. As far as I can tell, Rihanna just wants to have a really good time. And that’s okay too.
Is she a role model? She’s not mine. But I still count myself among her fans – and if you can watch this video and don’t soften to her a little bit well, there’s something not quite right with you.
