A few months ago, Irish Times fashion guru Rosemary Mac Cabe tossed a Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler (Powered by Braun) in my direction and said: “If you feel like trimming your beard try this and write a few words about it. This isn’t a hint, by the way.”

It was clearly a hint. In recent times, I’ve been pioneering a look called Old Tyme Prospector, spurred on partially by the hit television series Deadwood (available on UPC on Demand).

So I resisted Rosemary’s suggestion for a few months. Largely because, not being one for shaving, I wouldn’t know what to compare the Gillete Fusion ProGlide Styler (Powered by Braun) to, except the ministrations of the sun upon my luxuriant face-mane. I shave for job interviews. Usually I get a barber to do it along with my head hair. Then for a few weeks I look like an Action Man before gradually turning back into an Old Tyme Prospector again.

As I am in regular employment, I hadn’t shaved for some time. This resulted in something interesting. It gave me an entirely circular head. I resembled, I like to think, a friendly “furry sun”. Much like a hobo version of the baby sun in the Telly Tubbies. My wife said I looked liked a Gnasher badge (given free to all those who joined the Dennis the Menace Fan Club and the Gnasher Fang Club). I also have goggling eyes. According to my wife, this is not a good look.

So I sat shirtless in our back porch and began to shear myself (I’m not allowed to shave in the house, because the effect is akin to a fur-splosion). I liked using the Gillete Fusion ProGlide Styler (Powered by Braun). The hair came off my face pretty reliably. I kept some stubble, George Michael-style, because I’m no buttoned-down suit (I like to party) and also an extra bit of goatee because it makes me look wise (I have no chin).

After 20 minutes of shaving with the Gillete Fusion ProGlide Styler (Powered by Braun) using the “trim” option, I resembled, not an Old Tyme Prospector or a furry sun or a Gnasher badge, but a member of the boyband One Direction. Specifically, Harry Styles – the best one. I imagine other brands of razor may have done a similar job, but I’m unlikely to find out for another six months or so.
