The moment at the A/W 2012 Burberry show when the finale was played out with glitter falling from the ceiling and the models began to troop down the catwalk with studded-handled umbrellas was one of the fashion moments of 2012 – perhaps even the fashion moment. So it didn’t take much to have me coveting one of those striped umbrellas – and when I saw Chiara Ferragni (above) toting hers around Milan, I wanted one even more.

So I did what any tech-savvy shopaholic would do. Armed with my credit card, I went online to ie.burberry.com (which seems like a nice touch, having an Irish site, although it’s probably just another way to use the exchange rate to our downfall) and prepared to purchase.

And there it was, in all of its striped, studded glory. It comes in four colourways, to boot – a burnt orange, a mustard, a green and the purple, above. Just gorgeous, don’t you think?

And then I saw the price tag: €750. My jaw – quite literally – dropped. €750 for an umbrella, that will end its life one of two ways: either it will be left behind in a restaurant / shop fittingroom / on the bus and never be seen again or, so terrified will I be of the aforementioned loss of said umbrella, I will never use it.

Neither of these conclusions seems like €750 (the price of return flights to New York, the cost of my 1996 Subaru Vivio when I bought it about six years ago, or 100 burritos from Boojum, my fave burrito place). In short, I shall not be buying this umbrella.
