I feel as if, one day soon, we’ll wake up and Scott Schuman and Garance Doré will own the world – it feels like their takeover of the online fashion sphere is just the first step in a world domination plot. As if to prove me right, Schuman has started a new series on the Sartorialist, posts beginning with “if you’re thinking about …” and ending with a trend, at least, a street-style trend. This week’s is winter white:
I would assume that seeing the success of sites such as Pinterest and Polyvore sparked an idea in Schuman’s head about how people want to be able to see a kind of collage of their inspirations – to take their style cues from a bunch of images that are bundled together. It’s really, really smart, and a great way for Schuman to use up a load of old photographs that had been taken but never used.
Of course, people will argue that Bill Cunningham has been doing this for years in the New York Times, and so he has – but not online, not this specifically, and not with this few images. And in any case, there ain’t nothing original any more, is there? Are we still searching for newness, for originality, are are we just – as the best junkies might say – looking for the good stuff?
