So the longlists for the Irish Blog Awards are out – which means very little, as this is an unedited list of every single blog that was nominated in every single category. Naturally, I care only for one category*: the fashion and beauty category. So I spent, oh, I don’t know, approximately four hours of my life sifting through the blogs there and finding the ones I love, the ones I like and the ones I, frankly, don’t care for at all.
Now, it would be easy for me to pick out the blogs I read every day and go, “hey, yo, this is rad!” – I’d be giving you a list that included (but was not limited to) Fluff & Fripperies, I Blog Fashion, Help My Style, What She Wears, Angela Scanlon and Styleisle. But I thought it would be a little more interesting to tell you who’s new (to me, anyway). So here are my top three new and noteworthy:
Meet Molly Pocket. She does daily outfit posts with a heap of photographs, delightfully different hairstyles and she has a real way with styling – I love how she’s paired her Cos dress with a Zara skirt (above). She doesn’t talk too much and she does great collages. Top marks!
This is Fiona of Wardrobe Resurrection. She has a really nice, clean blog layout and does great, detailed posts on trends. I’d deduct marks for not crediting photographs (virtual slap on the wrist!), but her regular posting gets her off the hook. One for my daily reads, I think.
Last, but by no means least, Magpie Girl does really great outfit posts with gorgeous, bright colour combinations and the photography on her blog is just great in general (see above!). I love seeing little snippets of people’s lives in there (plus, she put up a post the other day with the most adorable puppy on it!).
And the bad . . .
Don’t worry, I’m not in a name ‘n’ shame mood, but I thought I’d throw it out there and let you know what little things turn me right off a blog. (I know, I know, you’re dying to know . . .)
Firstly, I can’t stand text on a black, navy, pink, red (etc) background. It hurts my eyes and makes me feel as if your blog is shouting at me. Unpleasant.
If you do haul videos, I really can’t be having any of it. I’m as nosy as the next girl, so I probably really want to know what you bought, but do a nice collage and then show me you wearing it. I really feel like smashing my computer when I hear “so I picked up this really cute skirt in Penneys; it was only a fiver and I think it’ll look great with” blah blah BLAH KILL ME NOW.
Next – and really, a lot of bloggers are guilty of this: “I received the jumble pops award from Rosie over at Sunshine, Sparkles and Unicorn Glitter! I’m so flattered – thanks Rosie! I now have to answer these 200 really, really boring questions before nominating 10 victims of my own. Yay!” Just no.
Another one? You’re and your = not the same word. I used to write things like that and go, “I know, I’m really OCD about these things!” but I realise, in my old age that actually, blogging and writing are not mutually exclusive. If you want to use writing as a hobby from which you hope to perhaps make money, learn the difference between you’re and your; its and it’s; their and there. Please.
“Click here to advertise with me!” Unless you’re Beaut.ie (did you know that Beaut.ie has more readers than Image magazine?), that just ain’t gonna wash. It looks vulgar and desperate – put a simple “contact me” bar, and if an advertiser stumbles across your blog and decides that you get enough hits (read, about a million a month) to warrant their spending money on advertising with you, they’ll use it.
And that’s it! Really, I love you all. (I would say thank you for voting for Fash Mob, but everyone here knows I voted for myself.)
* Okay, okay: as my other half is one half (does that make him my quarter?!) of the Comic Cast, I care about the podcast category, too.
