It’s official, I’m obsessed with Elle! But I had a good read of the September issue over the weekend and one of the articles that particularly struck me was where they interview fashion folk about how they shop for the new season – do they go for investment pieces, or fritter away their money on trendy nick-nacks? (No points for guessing correctly.) What really got me, though, was the fact that everyone interviewed claimed to have a strategy.

They all talked about identifying gaps in their wardrobes, investing in timeless pieces, going for statement accessories or, in Lorraine Candy, editor of Elle‘s case, knowing exactly what suits and how to adapt new trends so that they’ll blend, seamlessly, into their wardrobes. Sounds exhausting, right?!

Am I the only remaining fashion writer in the country who is absolutely rule-free when it comes to shopping for herself? My eBay selling record is just one way of knowing just how much I buy and don’t wear; I am an absolute impulse buyer, and half of the time I get very little wear out of my clothes. It’s a disgrace, but it’s the truth!

How do you shop? Are you a thoughtful or thoughtless spender? Share your shame!
