How many Irish Olympic athletes can you name (apart from Katie Taylor, above)? Now try with the UK or US teams – I bet you can name more of their athletes than you can of ours, and I don’t think this is your fault. There has been so much in the international media focused on Team GB and Team USA for the 2012 London Olympic Games, and very little – comparatively speaking – in our own national printed media. I was chatting with an Irish PR the other day who was saying that her UK-based company wanted to adorn its Irish windows with its Olympic dressings, and she was trying to explain to them that Irish people wouldn’t get it, that there’s not that much of a buzz surrounding the Olympics here as there is in the UK.
When we spoke about it, I couldn’t help but agree with her. The Olympics are a big deal – and I want to be all fired up about them – but without a real media buzz around them, I find myself all at sea. And, let’s face it, I’m too lazy to do my own research. Why have we all been so quiet on the Olympic front? Aside from anything else, wouldn’t the Games be a great excuse to drive home the message about healthy living that we’re supposed to believe is at the forefront of the HSE’s priority list?
