Madonna’s newest turn for Dolce & Gabanna involves, allegedly, her posing in a series of “real Italian housewife” poses. Now, we could question the likelihood of any Italian housewife wearing see-through trousers around the home, we could baulk at the idea of the word “housewife” entering an ad campaign, we could have a little chat about the highly airbrushed photographs . . . or, we could just call “glossy escapism” and get it over with.

My only concern is that having Madonna in an ad gives a few messages that are not necessarily genuine, namely, that older women are now being represented in ad campaigns. Make no mistake, this is not what an older woman looks like. This isn’t even what Madonna looks like, and I’m a little tired of being shown imagery of ageing that just serves to reinforce the stereotypes and pressure on women to find the elixir of youth.

PS  I know a lot of recent posts have focused on advertising, but it’s just how the fashion cookie crumbles: the campaign imagery seems to all have emerged together, so here we are!
