This is one of these kinds of fashion memes that seems simultaneously relevant and irrelevant. I don’t know a single person in Ireland who has purchased, or intends to purchase, an item from Chloe Sevigny’s collaboration with uber-hip US store Opening Ceremony. That said, who cares? We all love to love Sevigny, much like we love to love Zooey Deschanel, her partner in cool, and everything she touches turns to gold, at least in theory. (How gold can it be if no one’s buying?)

Her newest collaboration with Opening Ceremony is so far, so Chloe:

These images simultaneously thrill and bore me. There’s nothing new here, per se; short shorts, cropped knits, clogs . . . I’m hardly blown away, but I kind of (and I only say kind of) love it, mostly because I kind of love Sevigny. It’s a secret shame – or, now, not-so-secret.

She has amazing legs, it’s true, and her cropped hair suits her, and those are nice sunglasses, and doesn’t New York look nice there behind her and . . . oh yes, the clothes. Well. Short dresses – will they never go away?! They just are not appropriate for anywhere but New York streets while you’re keeping an eye out for Scott Schuman. And as for short shorts. However, I am aware that showing the clothes on Sevigny, much like when Victoria Beckham models for her own line, takes the emphasis off the clothes. To whit:

Oh look! A garden party! How original! Well, now, I suppose there’s no need to be catty. I don’t hate any of it (do you?). I don’t think it’s particularly “hate-able”. I think it’s all a bit nyeh. I do love ankle socks with a short skirt, I won’t lie, and the prints are pleasing to the eye, but I feel like we’ve seen it all before. If Sevigny was on an episode of The City, surely Kelly Cutrone would tell her that she, for one, couldn’t stand behind this line, and that she should just pull her socks up and start designing real clothes. Yes, I think Sevigny and Cutrone need to get together and have a chat.
