So the latest in a long line of toning footwear are Reebok’s Reetone runners – runners that claim to tone your butt (how very American) and calves with every step you take, increasing the effectivity of your workout. The patented sole technology (but of course) claims to mimick the effect of walking on sand, giving you an extra workout with your walk. Now, it doesn’t hugely appeal to me as walking on sand is (a) only lovely if it’s roasting and you’re in bare feet and (b) actually quite difficult to do over a long period, not to mention impossible if you decide to increase from a run to a gentle jog (or is it yog, with a soft j?).

Of course, the idea of training trainers is hardly new – MBT has been doing it for a while. I have a male friend who swears by them and, not to get too personal, if his ass is anything to go by, they do work. But, man, do they look unsightly. At least Reebok has put some chic in its step, even if it’s still a bit of a gimmick. And what about summertime?

Ah, the trusty FitFlop. Or are they trusty? Does anyone out there have first-hand experience of any of these? I know Tor of Fabfrocks has a pair of Reeboks that she swears by, but has anyone noticed any difference with either of the other two? Or will you be investing this summer, as the quest to GET BIKINI READY! (magazine headlines, natch) gets ever more important?
