This is the front cover of the very snazzy summer 2010 catalogue from plus-sized UK retailer, Evans. I’ve often wondered why retailers didn’t come out with their own magazines – Asos is particularly good at presenting its weekly newsletter in easy-to-digest and attractive magazine format – and in the past year or so, this has all started to change.

What these formats are particularly good for should be pretty evident from the above, but if not, I’ll explain: they present the items in a “lifestyle”-y way, much like advertisements do. From the outfits they put together, magazine-stylee, you, the reader, can see how the clothing that Evans has in stock could translate into your life and into your wardrobe. Simple and effective. It’s like a clearer version of the merchandising that they do in-store, when they layer a particular dress with a particular blazer, and throw a necklace on the rail in front of it.

It obviously helps that the images are beautifully shot, you don’t have to put up with rubbish pop music, and there are no pesky shop assistants* to deal with . . . I am LOVING the shoes above right, so gorgeous. Have a look at the Evans website for more; the catalogue is 32 pages or so, meaning there’s lots to get through . . .

* That is a joke. I love shop assistants, mostly.
