Fashion and weight have a close relationship that I won’t try to ignore – and nor should you. Fashion models are thinner than your average very thin person; I lived in Milan for three months, and would regularly see models walking around, portfolios under their arms, so thin that their bones were all visible through their skin. And I don’t mean their clavicles; I mean ribs, between where their breasts should have been; cheekbones, beneath where their cheeks should be; hip bones, behind where flesh should be. In case you’ve ever been in any doubt, New York magazine published this photograph of models backstage at Sao Paolo fashion week.

I’m constructing a debate about this properly, and hope to start a series discussing the issues behind weight, the fashion world and reality: the feminist angle, the health angle, the fashion angle, the psychological angle. I don’t want to go into it without thinking it through, which is why I’m taking my time but, in the meantime, this photograph should give you pause.
