Well the final week of the action has come to a close as we bid farewell to what has been a fantastic fantasy premier league season and as the dust settles on round 38 we take one last look at the weekend’s action in our usual Monday’s Managers Notes.

Heading into round 38 it seemed to be all about Arsenal and Tottenham, with both sides expected to go all out to secure the fourth and final Champions League fantasy investment in the sides looked wise but as we have learnt over the season you can never be 100% sure and once again we were all left a little disappointed as both sides scratched out a 1-0 win.

Those two games a side there were still plenty of points on offer on Sunday, so let’s have one last look at where they came from.

Lukaku Reminds Chelsea He Is Still There

They say that the last day of the season always throws up a surprise or two and while most the places that mattered had already been decided there was still one surprise to be found on the final day of fixtures.

Bale Couldn’t Save Tottenham

Gareth Bale was once again on the score sheet as he scored another stunning late winner for Tottenham, but despite his side’s 1-0 win over Sunderland it was not enough to win the battle to qualify for the Champions League on Sunday.

Mata Returns For One Last Flourish

Going into the last weekend of the season Chelsea knew that their Champions League position for next season was secure and having already won the Europa League Sunday’s game with Everton was of little importance.

West Ham Finish Strong As Nolan And Carroll Shine

Heading into Sunday’s fixture with Reading we expected to see Andy Carroll continue his good run of form, but one that we didn’t expect was the performance by Kevin Nolan as the Hammers ran out 4-2 winners.

Arsenal Stumble to Fourth Spot

As Sunday approached all the talk was about just who would get the fourth and final champions league place and with the Gunners heading to St James Park it was expected that they would cruise to victory, it wasn’t the case.

City Fall Apart On Final Day

They do say that on any given day that anything can happen, especially in football. Sunday turned out to be one of those days as the former Champions Manchester City fell apart and lost out to the Canaries at the Eithad.

They say that the last day of the season always throws up a surprise or two and while most the places that mattered had already been decided there was still one surprise to be found on the final day of fixtures.

Lukaku spoils Sir Alex's last game with a stunning hat-trick, but will we see him next season?

In Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge of United against West Brom we could have been forgiven for thinking that it was going to be a rather dull affair with United the likely victors with a 2-0 or 2-1 scoreline, boy oh boy were we mistaken.

There is no way anyone could have predicted that the game would finish in a 5-5 draw and there is certainly no way that anyone could have predicted that Romelu Lukaku would pick up a hat-trick especially given the fact he didn’t even start the game.

In what was likely his last game for the Baggies the on loan Chelsea striker was relegated to the bench by Steve Clarke as the Champions came to town and with many fantasy managers backing United for a clean sheet this news would have come as a welcomed surprise.

United were 3-1 up by half time and when Lukaku came on at half time you could not have imagined that we were going to see six goals in the second half of the game but we did.

Lukaku’s hat-trick will certainly have wet the appetite of Chelsea supporters who will be looking forward to seeing if he can produce some more of his magic at the Bridge next season, but with Ba and Torres already there fantasy managers may see a lot less of the highflying Belgian next season.

Gareth Bale was once again on the score sheet as he scored another stunning late winner for Tottenham, but despite his side’s 1-0 win over Sunderland it was not enough to win the battle to qualify for the Champions League on Sunday.

Bale shows his disappointment at not qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Going into the game Tottenham knew that matters were out of their hands and they were reliant on Newcastle to take points off the Gunners if they were to have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Unfortunately for Tottenham the Mapie’s couldn’t upset the odds and take anything from the game despite pushing the Gunners hard and for Tottenham it is once again a case of so close but no cigar.

To add to Tottenham’s frustration they had their highest-ever Premier League points total, their tally of 72 beating last season’s 69, when Harry Redknapp’s team finished fourth but failed to qualify for the Champions League because sixth-placed Chelsea won the competition and qualified as holders.

In a quite remarkable season, Bale has racked up 21 goals and nine assists and has delivered double figures on no less than 7 occasions –given that Robin Van Persie has produced only three sets of double figures, it highlights the Welshman’s explosive potential and providing he continues in a central role next time out, he’ll be favoured by many to oust the United man as the top scoring player for 2013/14 having come within 16 points of doing so this season.

While there is much talk of whether or not Bale will still be at the Lane next season the one thing we can bank on is that if he is still plying his trade in the Premier League he is pretty certain to be the first name on a lot of fantasy team sheets.

Going into the last weekend of the season Chelsea knew that their Champions League position for next season was secure and having already won the Europa League Sunday’s game with Everton was of little importance.

Mata's first goal in 11 weeks will have brought a smile to many fantasy managers faces.

The lack of any meaningful motivation wasn’t a factor however as the two sides treated us to what was a good game of football on the day that both managers took charge of their respective clubs for the last time.

A first goal since round 25 for Juan Mata helped Chelsea clinch a 2-1 victory over the Toffee’s, as Mata finished the season as third highest scoring midfielder on 166 points. His goal on Sunday was his forst for eleven weeks and with many managers relying on his assist over recent weeks the goal will have come as welcome news.

So having bowed out on a high there is no doubt that fantasy managers will be looking to Mata once again come the start of next season, but with Oscar also flourishing over the final weeks of the season a lot could depend on who the new managers is.

One thing we do know is that what Rafa Benitez no longer at the helm the squad rotation that has blighted fantasy managers when it came to selecting Chelsea players is over and hopefully we can look forward to seeing a lot more of Demba Ba in the next campaign.

Heading into Sunday’s fixture with Reading we expected to see Andy Carroll continue his good run of form, but one that we didn’t expect was the performance by Kevin Nolan as the Hammers ran out 4-2 winners.

Nolan and Carroll celebrate after what turned out to be a good day for the pair.

Prior to yesterday’s match with the Royals the West Ham midfielder had scored just three times since round 9 but, the former Newcastle man decided Sunday was a good day to turn back the clock and run riot.

Up against a Reading side that had conceded in every away game this season Nolan turned on the style and netted and a hat-trick in a game that had very little riding on it for both sides.

Nolan’s hat-trick will certainly have helped those fantasy managers who made the call to bring him prior to the start of play on Sunday and while we did not see him doing as well as he did, we were impressed by the prospects of his team mate Andy Carroll, who did make it into our tips.

Carroll who had been in good form at home in recent weeks producing attacking returns in five of the last six in front of his own fans and heading into the final day of the season didn’t disappoint as he picked up two assists for his efforts against the Royals.

After what has been a disappointing season for Andy Carroll his recent exploits that have seen him finish with four goals and four assists in his last eight games may have just perched him nicely in the transfer window over the summer with a number of clubs including West Ham and Newcastle linked with a permanent mover for the striker.

As Sunday approached all the talk was about just who would get the fourth and final champions league place and with the Gunners heading to St James Park it was expected that they would cruise to victory, it wasn’t the case.

Koscienly celebrates his winning goal that assured Arsenal of Champions League football next season.

The previous meeting between the two at the Emirates finished up in a 7-3 victory for Arsenal over the Toon Army and with that in mind the likes of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski looked set to shine on the final day.

But not for the first time this season the Gunners failed to live up to expectation and many managers were left counting the cost as their rivals pulled away from them in their mini leagues.

It was left down to Laurent Koscielny to get the games only goal and although Lukas Podolski did pick up the assist, justifying his place in our tips, we were expecting more from him and the Gunners midfield.

It wasn’t all bad however, Sunday’s 1-0 win secured another clean sheet for the Arsenal rearguard and produced their 14th clean sheet of the season which means they finish the season with the second best defensive record of the season.

With Arsenal surely set to add to their squad durung the summer Arsene Wenger’s side are sure to be full of fantasy prospects once again next season, with the likes of Cazorla and Walcott set to feature heavily.

They do say that on any given day that anything can happen, especially in football. Sunday turned out to be one of those days as the former Champions Manchester City fell apart and lost out to the Canaries at the Eithad.

Things didn't exactly go to plan for City as Brian Kidd to charge of their final game of the season.

Despite being without a manager we stall fancied City’s chances of finishing the season strongly and with Norwich coming to town a clean sheet looked like it was a fairly safe bet, oh how wrong were we?

City had produced five clean sheets in the previous seven in front of their own fans, while Chris Hughton’s side had very poor on the road this seson, scoring just twice in the seven away games prior to yesterday’s showdown.

But with caretaker boss Brian Kidd taking charge and then opting to make a number of changes things went down hill quickly for City, bringing their dreadful season stuttered to a finish with a 3-2 defeat.

Brian Kidd chose to partner Micah Richards and Matija Nastasic at the back, with Carlos Tevez joined by Edin Dzeko up top. Replaced by Sergio Aguero just after the break, Tevez finished as City’s top points scorer despite returning a single assist in his last six matches, while Aguero finished the campaign on 102 points.

Looking ahead to next season, City are sure to be there or there abouts once again, but with the new manager yet to be confirmed our fantasy faith could be tested depending on just who gets the job.

With this week’s player and captain tips out of the way it is time for us to have a look at all the news from this morning’s press conferences as we try and gleam some sort of understanding about how the teams will line up this weekend.

We start this weekend’s team news at Stamford Bridge where Rafa Benitez has told the waiting press that Chelsea will be without of Eden Hazard and John Terry is also sidelined for Chelsea while opponents Everton will be without Leon Osman who is suffering from a knee injury. That looks to be bad news for Marouane Fellaini owners, with the Belgian likely to continue in a deep lying midfield role for the Stamford Bridge trip.

Liverpool have no new injury worries ahead of their final game of the season with QPR at Anfield, while Harry Redknapp has siad that Loic Remy will be available for their final game of the season despite his recent difficulties with the Police. Redknapp also has hinted that Jose Bosingwa will not feature at Liverpool while Adel Tarrabt is also likely to miss out for “personal reasons”.

There has been no press conference at the Eithad today as caretaker boss Brian Kidd chose to remain quite ahead of their game with Norwich, while the Canaries will continue to be without Michael Turner.

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is unsure whether or not to start Olivier Giroud who is back from suspension, he could choose put Lukas Podolski out wide or even to the bench. With Mikel Arteta a major doubt, Wenger a problem in the middle of the park with Jack Wilshere still a doubt having only played a small part in the Gunners midweek win over Wigan.

Maurico Pochettino is hopeful Ricky Lambert and Luke Shaw will be fit for Stoke game after both missed training this week. Tony Pulis is not without his own injury concerns as he awaits news on Glen Whelan ahead of their clash with the Saints.

Champions League hopefuls Tottenham have no new injury concerns after he confirmed that Benniot Assou-Ekotto is back after missing out with knee problem last week.

Finally Sir Alex Ferguson in his last press conference as Manchester United manager has confirmed that there will be changes to the United line up for his last game in charge against the Baggies with Anders Lindegaard replacing David De Gea the manager also confirmed that Phil Jones and Johnny Evans will partner up in the center of defence with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic set to make way.

The final round of the Irish Times Fantasy Premier League will play out this weekend as the Premier League draws to a close on Sunday afternoon.

Sturridge has scored six goals in his last four Premier League Games

With the league title won and already presented to Manchester United last weekend and Wigan joining Reading & Q.P.R. earlier this week as the third team to be relegated there is only one part of the Premier League table to be decided this weekend that matters.

This is of course the final Champions League qualification spot that Arsenal are favourites to take ahead of Tottenham.

Many Premier League stars will have their holidays booked and some may already be on the beach, it is difficult to find players who have the motivation to put in 110%.Taking this into consideration we have decided to back a player that made it into our Captain Tips last week.

Daniel Sturridge was on song as he scored a hat-trick against Fulham to the delight of those fantasy football managers who gave him the armband. Liverpool entertain a QPR team that appear to be getting worse even though we didn’t think that was possible. It has been a positive season for Brendan Rogers and Liverpool as he collected more Premier League points than last season and his January signings of Sturridge and Coutinho have been excellent over the last five games.

Tottenham’s player of the season Gareth Bale will really be looking for a win against Sunderland. The White Hart Lane faithful are delighted that Sunderland’s Premier League status for next season has been confirmed ahead of this fixture. A big home win for Tottenham weil be demanded by their fans because if Arsenal fail to win they could claim the final remaining Champions League spot themselves.

Our final selection to get the nod as a possible captain pick is big Andy Carroll. The young English forward is still on loan from Liverpool and with West Ham unlikely to be able to afford to purchase him his future is in doubt. West Ham have not scored in their last two Premier League outings but the Hammers will be looking to close the season with a bang! On a personal level Carroll will be looking to add to his goal scoring total of seven for the season. Carroll missed much of the season with injury but has put in some strong performances lately including a goal against Manchester City in round 35 of the Irish Times Fantasy Premier League.
