Heading into Sunday’s fixture with Reading we expected to see Andy Carroll continue his good run of form, but one that we didn’t expect was the performance by Kevin Nolan as the Hammers ran out 4-2 winners.
Prior to yesterday’s match with the Royals the West Ham midfielder had scored just three times since round 9 but, the former Newcastle man decided Sunday was a good day to turn back the clock and run riot.
Up against a Reading side that had conceded in every away game this season Nolan turned on the style and netted and a hat-trick in a game that had very little riding on it for both sides.
Nolan’s hat-trick will certainly have helped those fantasy managers who made the call to bring him prior to the start of play on Sunday and while we did not see him doing as well as he did, we were impressed by the prospects of his team mate Andy Carroll, who did make it into our tips.
Carroll who had been in good form at home in recent weeks producing attacking returns in five of the last six in front of his own fans and heading into the final day of the season didn’t disappoint as he picked up two assists for his efforts against the Royals.
After what has been a disappointing season for Andy Carroll his recent exploits that have seen him finish with four goals and four assists in his last eight games may have just perched him nicely in the transfer window over the summer with a number of clubs including West Ham and Newcastle linked with a permanent mover for the striker.
