As Sunday approached all the talk was about just who would get the fourth and final champions league place and with the Gunners heading to St James Park it was expected that they would cruise to victory, it wasn’t the case.

Koscienly celebrates his winning goal that assured Arsenal of Champions League football next season.

The previous meeting between the two at the Emirates finished up in a 7-3 victory for Arsenal over the Toon Army and with that in mind the likes of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski looked set to shine on the final day.

But not for the first time this season the Gunners failed to live up to expectation and many managers were left counting the cost as their rivals pulled away from them in their mini leagues.

It was left down to Laurent Koscielny to get the games only goal and although Lukas Podolski did pick up the assist, justifying his place in our tips, we were expecting more from him and the Gunners midfield.

It wasn’t all bad however, Sunday’s 1-0 win secured another clean sheet for the Arsenal rearguard and produced their 14th clean sheet of the season which means they finish the season with the second best defensive record of the season.

With Arsenal surely set to add to their squad durung the summer Arsene Wenger’s side are sure to be full of fantasy prospects once again next season, with the likes of Cazorla and Walcott set to feature heavily.
