Tuesday night’s victory over Wigan was one that was badly needed by the Gunners if they were to remain ahead of their north London rivals Tottenham in the race for the Champions League and this weekend’s game is no different.
The Gunners travel to Newcastle in a game that they simply must win if they are to be guaranteed that fourth and final Champions League place, one man who could have a huge say in the result is Lukas Podolski.
The German international was on hand to net twice as his side over came Wigan in a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night and with one more game to go Arsenal will be counting on him to produce once again.
Having suffered somewhat from rotation in the middle part of the season, Podolski has come back strong in the absence of the suspended Olivier Giroud and picked up three goals in six games.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put his dip in form down to the fatigue due to the lack of a winter break that he would have been used to playing in German, but to his credit he has recovered and is looking sharp.
There is however a slight fly in ointment in terms of Podolski’s prospect this coming weekend and that is the fact that Giroud has now served his suspension and is available to play this weekend, but given that the Podolski was on form with a brace last time out it seems highly unlikely that Wenger will drop him when they are in need of all three points.
