To say Monday night’s heavy defeat at the hands of Aston Villa was not expected is an understatement and it is certainly not one that Sunderland will want to dwell on for too long as they search for safety.
Monday night’s result puts the Black Cats back in mix at the bottom along with Aston Villa, Newcastle who now all sit precariously on 37 points, just five points ahead of Wigan who have a game in hand.
While many managers would run a mile from a side that conceded six goals the previous week we in fact actually think that there could be value in the Black Cats defence this coming weekend in the form of John O’ Shea.
Not for the first time this season the Ireland international has popped up on our radars and with a game against Stoke to come this weekend at the Stadium of Light O’ Shea and Sunderland will want to right the wrongs of last weekend.
A win against Stoke would put the Black Cat’s on that magical 40 point mark with the Potter having already hit that milestone they could the three points could be there for the taking for Di Canio’s side.
Sunderland have picked up 11 clean sheets this season and with seven of those coming at home number eight may soon follow against a Stoke side that have nothing left to play for and who have only managed 11 goals on the road this season, which is the worst record in the league.
