Chelsea were shell shocked when the ever improving Southampton beat them 2-1 to dent their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. The reigning European Champions were again humbled in the Barclays Premier League with both Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez the Southampton men scoring to take the plaudits.
Over their last six Premier League games Southampton have beaten Manchester City, Liverpool and of course Chelsea last weekend. Nobody liked to see Adkins get sacked but the introduction of Pochettino has certainly bolstered the Southampton team. The next step for the Saint is to bring a level of consistency to their game as they have also lost to Newcastle, QPR and suffered a 0-0 draw with Norwich in their other Premier Leagues over the same period.
The cornerstone to their success of the season has been Rickie Lambert who has scored four goals and collected three assists over his last seven premier league games. Many Irish Times Fantasy Premier League managers decided to sell the highest scoring Englishman over the last two rounds of fantasy football which looks to be a mistake.
Another revelation is that Pochettino has managed to get Jay Rodriguez to start fulfilling his potential. He was one of Nigel Adkins marque signings but he never delivered consistently when Adkins was manager. Over his last four appearances for the saints Rodriguez has scored twice with two assists to his name also.
Southampton face a tasty visit to Reading, the Club Adkins recently was appointed manager. We did not expect to see Pochettino and Adkins to go head to head so soon and with Reading in desperate need of a win we can expect to see fireworks. Southampton still need some results to be safe from relegation and bringing Lambert & Rodriguez into your fantasy premier league team looks a great call.
