The bain of many a fantasy premier league manager’s life has to be squad rotation and the number one culprit for this was up to his old tricks again at the weekend as he shuffled his pack at the back.
Rafa Benitez’s propensity to rotate his team on an almost weekly basis saw him drop John Terry and Gary Cahill at the back after their recent game against Middlesbrough in the F.A Cup in favour of David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic at centre-half.
This change was not all bad from a fantasy point of view as those who have invested in Azpillicueta were happy to see him recalled at right back and pick up a clean sheet for his efforts.
While Azpilicueta may entice some managers to invest it is worth noting that he has failed to start two out of the last three and with stats like that, it is a highly risky investment.
For those looking to invest in the Chelsea rear guard goalkeeper Petr Cech and Ashley Cole look to be almost rotation proof at the back under Benitez, while David Luiz could also be one to keep an eye on due to his versatility.
Luiz has now started two of the last three games for Chelsea, playing in central midfield back in round 26 before being switched back to defensive duties. The Brazilian does also offer a threat going forward as was evident by his assist at the weekend for Ba’s goal.
But with Rafa continuing to tinker with his team the fantasy potential of a number of players has to come into question over the coming weeks and fantasy premier league managers will have to watch the situation closely at the Bridge over the coming weeks.
