Having tipped the Everton defender for a clean sheet last time out we were more that disappointed to see the toffee’s concede two on the day against Norwich in a scoreline that not many would have seen coming, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Despite the distinct lack of a clean sheet last time out it was not a complete loss for fantasy managers who made the investment in the England international. Baines was on hand to grab an assist as he set up Leon Osman for Everton’s only goal of the game.
This latest assist does offer fantasy managers hope going into round 28 that we could be about to see the resurgence of the left backs attacking returns, which by his standards have been poor this season.
Reading make the trip to Merseyside this weekend and while many may look at this game and think that the Royals will get a goal, we would beg to differ. Having been on a fantastic run of late the wheels came off the bandwagon last weekend for Brian McDermott’s side as they went down 3-0 to Wigan.
This latest result was no accident Reading looked to way off the pace and their performance suggests that perhaps their purple patch is over and that we may be about to see them fall away, of course as we any team it could have just been an off week, but we don’t think so.
Baines of course does have the potential to pick up goals and assists as we well know and even if the Royals can pull themselves together ahead of their trip to Goodison, they will certainly have a hard job containing Baines as he goes in search of his fifth goal of the season.
