Southampton’s turn around this season has been nothing short of remarkable and although some will argue that the sacking of Nigel Adkins was not the right move to make there is no doubting their improvement since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.
The Saints have only lost two in their last ten which is impressive given the fact that they had lost five of their previous ten games.Pochettino’s approach has been quite simply and yet effective, he sets his side out to counter and counter at pace and it seems to be working a treat.
One man who has benefited from this has been their star striker Rickie Lambert, the Saints number 7 has been in blistering form over recent weeks and has been instrumental in the Saints reversal of fortunes.
Over the last ten games the 6ft 2in center forward has scored five goals and contributed with four assists, which just goes to show he is flourishing under Pochettino’s system.
Pochettino’s men make the trip up north to take on a Newcastle side that are also enjoying a purple patch, largely thanks to their fresh influx of Frech blood, but at the back however they have been susceptible to giving away soft goals having only managed to keep two clean sheet at St James Park all season and with news that Davide Santon is a doubt with an ankle injury going into this one it only adds to their frailty at the back.
At £5.7 million investment in Lambert could be right up fantasy managers street, with his reasonable price tag and potential of returns offering managers the opportunity to splash the cash elsewhere and strengthen up other areas such as their midfield.
