The former Blackburn central defender was another new addition to the fantasy premier league in the January transfer window and is the second new signing to find his way into our thoughts as we assess the potential of defenders as the unlimited transfer window swings into action in the Irish Times Fantasy Premier League.
There is no doubting that the R’s have got their act together at the back since the arrival of Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road and Samba is a welcome addition to the Rangers defence.
Rangers at this point in the season find themselves at the bottom of the table and with their backs against the wall, but for fantasy managers this is not necessarily a bad thing. Let me expand, as the season draws to a close many of the teams in the league will have nothing left to play for and for that reason we can see some of those ever repliable players fall off in terms of performances and those left with it all to play for can up their game as they bid to avoid the drop.
As far as the R’s prospects are concerned their fixtures are not the worst you could hope for when looking to avoid relegation. Manchester United, Sunderland, Wigan, Stoke , Arsenal and Newcastle are yet to come at Loftus Road over the coming weeks and although these look tough at first when we drill down into the stats things begin to look slightly brighter for Harry’s side.
The R’s have managed four clean sheets in their last six games and have not conceded a goal at Loftus Road during that time, which may seem all that impressive but when you consider they have kept Tottenham, Chelsea and Norwich under wraps in those games it begins to look a lot better for the basement boys going into their final home games.
Away from home Queens Park Rangers travel to Southampton, Aston Villa, Fulham, Everton, Reading and finish off their season at Anfield against Liverpool. Away days have always been tough for the R’s and their well documented trouble scoring goals on the road will not help their cause much, but with their most recent clean sheet away from home coming at Stamford Bridge there is hope for the R’s.
Samba looks to be nailed on at the back for Harry’s side and with his ariel ability well documented over recent seasons he will undoubtedly get chances to score his first goal for his new club as the season draws to a conclusion.
