With one game left to play in round 15 of the Irish Times fantasy premier league as struggling Newcastle take on Wigan at St. James Park our thoughts are already turning to round 16 and the prospects between the sticks. As we said with one game left to play only four goalkeepers managed to earn fantasy managers the maximum 6 points for the clean sheet which based on recent weeks is fairly bad given that round 13 and 14 a total of fifteen clean sheets, so we will be hoping for a return to form in round 16 for many of those sides who have shown their metal at the back in recent weeks.
With that in mind we have gone for two goalkeeper that may have not exactly excelled last week but who we expect to turn it around in round 16 of the Irish Times Fantasy Premier League.
Simon Mignolet (Sunderland) £3.4 million Fixture: Chelsea (Home)
The Sunderland shot stopper has not had a bad season even if his side has underperformed and he currently occupies 7th place overall in the keeper standings with 26 points achieving 4 clean sheets. The Black Cats are on an awful run of form sitting 17thin the league 1 point ahead of the Saints so this round of fixtures will be key for them to get some daylight between themselves and the bottom 3. O’Neil’s side don’t have it all their way though they welcome Rafa’s Chelsea who lost last week at West Ham. They have scored 1 goal under his management and have no wins from his first 3 league games in charge. Chelsea also have a midweek champions league game to contend with and a european hangover could rear it’s ugly head at the Stadium of Light. At home the Black Cats have only managed one win so far this season and 3 draws, these are not entirely impressive stats but they have however only conceded 7 goals in 6 home games which is all the more impressive when you consider that 4 of those 7 came in one game and hey everyone is allowed an off day right?
Mark Schwarzer (Fulham) £3.4 million Fixture: Newcastle (Home)
Fulham went down 3-0 to an inform Tottenham at the weekend and many will feel that the Cottagers are beginning to slip at home and to an extent they might be right, but this coming weekend see’s the visit of struggling Newcastle to the Cottage and despite the fact that the Magpie’s are yet to play in round 15 their form of late has been dismal. Alan Pardew’s side have struggled for goals over the last number of weeks and even though they have 7 goals in 7 away games this season they have failed to score in 2 of those 7 and were lucky to get a goal last time out against Stoke. Fulham will be looking to turn things around at home this weekend and we are expecting a shut out at the back as Newcastle continue to fumble through games with a long list of injuries. There is no doubt that this one is far from nailed on but with the Cottagers heading into games against QPR, Liverpool and Southampton after this one now could be the time to get Schwarzer in.
