With the introduction of Rafa Benitez as the new Chelsea manager many fantasy premier league managers will be hoping that he can return Fernando Torres to the goal scoring machine that he once was at Anfield. It is likely that Benitez will have an effect on Fernando but it is highly unlikely that he can change El Nino’s fortunes in time for this weekend’s clash with Man City. With the appointment Benitez does come with a warning however, the former Liverpool boss is notorious for rotating his squad with the aim of keeping the player fresh so we could well see some big names dropped over the coming weeks.
As we focus on round 13 of the Irish Times Fantasy Premier League there are a number of players who are struggling to be fit for the weekend, Wayne Rooney is the most high profile injury worry as he stuggles to shake off a bout of tonsillitis in time for Saturday’s game with QPR. Bryan Ruiz is another Fulham player who will miss out this weekend as he limped off with a hamstring injury against Sunderland last time out. There are no other major injury worries for fantasy managers ahead of the weekend and with that said here are our forwards tips for round 13.
Robin Van Persie (Man United) £8.5 Million Fixture: QPR (Home)
United were left somewhat shell shocked as they were beaten 1-0 by Norwich at Carrow Road last time out which meant that much to the disappointment of many fantasy premier league manager he produced a big fat 2 points for his efforts. This weekend should be a different story however as United welcome former player and Man City boss Mark Hughes and his struggling QPR to Old Trafford. The R’s have conceded 11 on the road this season and have yet to keep a clean sheet on their travels, in fact they have only managed one clean sheet all season. Rangers have conceded 23 goals this season which is second only to Southampton’s 30. Lokking at where the goals have been conceded it’s no surprise when you see that they have also conceded the most chances in the penalty area at 127 which averages out at just over 10.5 chances per game and with stats like that there can be little doubt that van Persie will certainly thrive in an situation like that and hopefully produce a few goals to make up for last week’s blank.
Luis Suarez (Liverpool) £7.1 million Fixture: Swansea (Away)
The stats don’t lie and unlike last season when the post was his best friend it’s all going right for the Uruguayan this term with 10 goals and 2 assists from his first 12 played. With 69 points on the board should his current form continue last season’s total of 136 will be smashed; let’s not forget though he was banned for a chunk of that but that’s done now and should be left where it is. Considering most fantasy managers thought he was a risk in your front line early doors he now paying back those who showed faith in the Liverpool striker. Liverpool may have only lost 3 times this season but its due to the 6 drawn that they find themselves occupying 11th place; away from home though they are getting the goals with 9 scored out of 5 played so they do not sit back and let the home side take advantage. This week could be a fiery affair as Rodgers returns to Swansea for the first time since his departure over the summer. The Swans beat Liverpool as well 3 weeks ago dumping them out the Capital Cup and they have failed to win in any fixture versus Swansea since 1989. There is a slight word of warning however for those considering bringing in Suarez, he is one yellow card away from a one match ban, but based on his current form I wouldn’t let that put me off.
Carlos Tevez (Man City) £7.4 million Fixture: Chelsea (Away)
After his awesome display last weekend it is almost impossible to leave Carlos out of this week’s tips despite City’s trip to Stamford Bridge this Sunday. City go into this on the back of a 5-0 victory over Villa last weekeed and a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Tevez himself started Wednesday’s game on the bench as it seemed City boss Roberto Mancini had one eye on this weekend’s clash so Tevez should be fresh enough come Sunday. The former West Ham and Man United striker has 6 goals and 8 assists to his name after picking up two of each against Villa. Chelsea on the other hand have conceded 7 goals at home this season and 2 clean sheets however their defensive stats are not so impressive without John Terry who will be out of this weekend’s game and with Chelsea now starting a new era under yet another new manager Rafa Benitez there could be a few goals for City and Tevez up for grabs come Sunday.
